Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage season 2 might lose key guest star to new CBS show

The CBS sitcom's boss teases the 'tricky' plans ahead for their double-booked guest star set to return in some capacity in season 2.

The first season of CBS' breakout hit sitcom Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage has come to an end, but not without a (big) bang for the titular couple. Both Georgie and Mandy were forced to confront their professional futures as Jim fielded an offer to sell the tire shop to Fred Fagenbacher for a large sum and Mandy received a promotion at the news station... from her ex-boyfriend.

Mandy wouldn't have had a problem with her promotion if she had been honest with Georgie from the jump that her boss was Scott, played by guest star Christopher Gorham, who she was romantically involved with in San Antonio. But she waits too long to fess up to her husband, and his frustration collides with his stress over coming up with the money to buy McAllister Auto.

Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage ends its first season with the couple slightly still at odds but united by their love. Georgie bought the shop with Ruben, and Mandy's still taking the weather job with Scott as her boss. Being so, Christopher Gorham has already been confirmed to return in season 2, but his most recent role in a new CBS drama series might prevent him from appearing often.

Scott will be back (kind of) in Georgie & Mandy season 2

As CBS fans likely know, Gorham landed a series regular role in the network's upcoming Fire Country spinoff series Sheriff Country, which premieres this fall. The actor plays Travis, a lawyer and the ex-husband of the spinoff's lead character Sheriff Mickey Fox (Morena Baccarin). Gorham landed the Sheriff Country role shortly after his guest role on Georgie & Mandy was announced.

Because Gorham has a series regular role on another television show, that reduces his availability to return to Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage season 2. However, in a post-finale interview with TV Line, showrunner Steve Holland confirmed that the series will be bringing Gorham back as much as he can and won't be recasting the role of Scott in season 2. Here's what Holland said:

"We don’t want to recast. We love Chris. That’s a CBS show as well, so our hope is that we can work it out with their production team when we need him, and we can get ahead. One of the benefits of that show being single camera is he probably won’t be shooting every day. Obviously, it’s out of the country, which makes it a little tricky, but we’re pretty confident we can work it out."

There will be a number of obstacles to overcome beyond Gorham's availability, including the fact that Sheriff Country will be filming in Canada rather than California, where the sitcom films. If he's needed to step in as Scott in the premiere episodes, that could cause a bit of a scheduling headache since the start of a new television season tends to not have much wiggle room for series regulars.

But there are definite upsides for Georgie & Mandy fans who love Gorham (though maybe not Scott) and want to see him back. Both shows are obviously on CBS, which Holland pointed out, and the fact that the sitcom is multi-cam means there's one filming day. That makes it much easier for guest stars to drop by for appearances and could be a huge benefit to get Scott back in season 2.

However, it's unclear how many fans will want Scott back and for how long. Scott seemed to still have some lingering feelings for Mandy even though he's engaged (he kept their working together a secret, too!). He's not going to be well-liked if he crosses the line and acts on these feelings. If anything, we need the Scott storyline wrapped up. Maybe he'll move away to California and Mandy will get a new boss. Let's manifest that instead of more marital tension!

Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage returns to CBS on Thursdays this fall.
