If you're still curious about the exact reasons why ABC chose to cancel Doctor Odyssey after one season, its leading star doesn't have an explanation for us.
For the first time since the nautical medical drama was unofficially canceled in June, after the network allowed the cast's contracts to lapse about one month after what's now the series finale, series star Joshua Jackson breaks his silence about feeling "bummed out." That's pretty much how fans of the show are feeling knowing that we'll likely never get Max, Avery, or Tristan back.
Joshua Jackson responds to Doctor Odyssey cancellation
In a new interview with People, Jackson address the Doctor Odyssey cancellation and lamented not be able to hit the high seas again with the crew. The actor expressed that he enjoyed the experience of making the show and will miss the cast and crew now that it's over. While he's "sad" that there won't be a season 2 of what seemed like a promising new show, he's also realistic.
"But this is a crazy and difficult business, and whatever the reasons were for them not wanting to move forward with it, they don't actually tell us those things," Jackson told the magazine. See? Even he doesn't know why ABC didn't renew Doctor Odyssey for season 2. Judging by his interview, the cast were all game to return to the Odyssey for another chaotic trip on the ocean, though.

Jackson joked that even though ABC didn't ordered a second season right now, it wouldn't be out of the cards for the network to potentially later on opt to make the show with a new cast. "They may make that show with somebody else," he said to People. "I have no idea what their plans are. They haven't let me know, but I am not holding my breath that it's coming back."
Of course, Jackson's comments about ABC making the show "with somebody else" refers to the fact that the cast's contracts have expired. That means, if ABC were to decide to walk back on this de-facto cancellation and order Doctor Odyssey season 2, they would have to negotiate new contracts with main cast members Jackson, Phillipa Soo, Sean Teale, and Don Johnson. On the other hand, as Jackson alluded to, a new cast would avoid ironing out new contracts with the season 1 cast.
However, that's about as unlikely as ABC surprising us all and announcing season 2. After all, the network has already revealed the premiere dates for the 2025-2026 fall television season, which kicks off in September with High Potential season 2 and continues into October with the likes of Abbott Elementary season 5, 9-1-1 season 9, 9-1-1 Nashville, and Grey's Anatomy season 22.
As for Doctor Odyssey, we might not be getting a second season (now or ever), but it's nice to know that while Jackson might be bummed and sad just like all of us, he also had a great time making the show — just like all of us. The actor praised co-creator and executive producer Ryan Murphy in his interview with People, so fingers crossed we see him in another Murphy production very soon!
