With it being this long, I don't know if we should all just give up. Perhaps, the ship has sailed. Many ABC shows got renewed for the fall 2025 season. However, Doctor Odyssey season 2 remains in limbo. And its lead star's most recent comment doesn't make things sound any better.
A few days ago, main actor Joshua Jackson, who plays Dr. Max Bankman in the medical drama, attended the Motion Picture & Television Fund (MPTF) NextGen Annual Summer Party. While posing for pictures on the red carpet, someone toff camera told him that they hope the show gets renewed for a second season.
Jackson looked a bit uncomfortable and careful was with his words. Not from the question, I think it has more to do with the decision-makers at ABC. All he could say was, "they haven't told us yet." Check out the clip posted to social media below.
The seafaring medical drama caused a splash in the best way possible for television when it premiered in the fall 2024 season. The first installment, which was 18 episodes, ended a little over a month ago in May 2025. So it hasn't been that long overall since the first season ended. However, ABC has already revealed its 2025 fall TV schedule and renewed the rest of its scripted shows. Doctor Odyssey is the only one that, as Jackson said, they haven't made a decision on.
Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich previously told TVLine that even if the series does get renewed, it definitely won't be a part of the fall season this time around. We already figured as much, especially with the Thursday night time slots full. That will include 911, new series 911: Nashville, which takes over Doctor Odyssey's time slot at 9 p.m. ET, and Grey's Anatomy. It's already pretty full.
Erwich also went on to say that it's up to co-creator Ryan Murphy about "what the next chapter might be." So, part of the delay might be the co-creator himself who has a lot of projects going on including the 911 shows, American Horror Story, All's Fair, and Monsters season 3 focusing on murderer Ed Gein on Netflix.
Perhaps these other productions need his attention right now, but it would be a true shame if the medical drama got cancelled because it wasn't seen as a priority. Even late-night talk show host John Oliver himself is pleading for the network to renew the Joshua Jackson-led series. It's truly one of the most refreshing stories we've seen on television in so long. Here's to hoping we, and the cast and crew, are put out of this limbo soon.
