It's been some time since the Will Trent season 3 finale aired on ABC, and we're still not over how the season wrapped up. The police procedural is known for its jaw-dropping endings, but this one took things to a whole new level. Not one but two fan-favorite characters were left in precarious situations. Now, fans are eager to see how those cliffhangers will play out in the upcoming fourth season and whether their favorite characters will be okay.
Adding to the excitement, Will Trent star Ramón Rodríguez recently gave an encouraging update about the show’s future beyond season 4, hinting that there could be much more to come. Rodríguez is best known for starring in the leading role of Will Trent, a GBI special agent who takes on complex cases. He's also an executive producer on the series, meaning he plays a key role not only in front of the camera but also behind the scenes. In a recent interview with Variety, he spoke briefly about his experience working on Will Trent, his opportunity to step away from TV to take on some film work, and what the hit police procedural's future looks like at the moment.
Rodríguez most recently starred in the Prime Video action thriller G20, which saw Viola Davis playing as the U.S. president who must rely on her skills and experience in leadership and military matters to navigate a deadly terrorist takeover. Rodríguez portrayed the role of the President's loyal Secret Service bodyguard. He explained to Variety how he enjoyed the experience of learning and practicing weapons training and martial arts while working on the movie. It reignited his passion to take on more challenging and exciting roles.
"I want juicy, meaty parts, whether they’re dramatic or action driven.”
However, don't go thinking that this means he's stepping away from Will Trent anytime soon. Rodríguez made it clear that he remains deeply committed to the series as long as the stories they tell stay fresh and exciting. He believes that if the creative team ever stops feeling inspired or passionate about the show, then they shouldn’t keep making it just for the sake of it. Fortunately, right now, he says that everyone involved is still very motivated and creatively excited about the series.
"If we don’t feel inspired anymore, we shouldn’t be doing it. Luckily, so far, everyone’s feeling really inspired creatively.”
Will Trent has currently been renewed only through its fourth season, so the show's long-term future remains uncertain. However, with its strong ratings, critical acclaim, and loyal fan base, it’s highly probable that the adventures of GBI special agent Will Trent will extend well beyond season 4. From Rodríguez’s remarks, it’s evident that the creative team is fully committed to continuing the series, so fans can rest assured on that front. Now, it’s just a matter of ABC giving the green light for more seasons to come. Fingers crossed!
Will Trent season 4 is confirmed to start airing on ABC in early 2026.
