It's been a week since the Will Trent season 3 finale aired on ABC, and we're still trying to wrap our minds around that shocking ending. The finale left the fates of two beloved characters uncertain, leaving fans anxious and eager for answers. But that's not the only thing weighing heavily on viewers' minds. Will and Angie's relationship, once a central emotional thread of the series, now seems like it's reached its official end after how things left off between the two characters.

Will and Angie's relationship is complex and deeply emotional. Having grown up together in the foster system, they've experienced a lot side by side. Their difficult past has created a strong connection, both as friends and romantically. Yet, despite this bond, they struggle to make a romantic relationship work. For the longest time, they've had an on-again, off-again type of relationship, but everything falls apart when Will makes the decision to arrest Angie for tampering with evidence and lying under oath in the Will Trent season 2 finale.

Spoilers ahead from Will Trent season 3!

In season 3, both Will and Angie move on with new partners. Will starts a relationship with DA Marion Alba, and Angie gets together with the charismatic Dr. Seth McDale. However, things don't end up working out between Will and Marion, and they decide to take a break in their relationship. Will ends the season single, while Angie stays together with Seth.

In the Will Trent season 3 finale, there’s a tender scene where Angie sits in a hospital bed while Will stands nearby, anxiously waiting for the doctor’s news about her baby’s health. Once they learn the baby is healthy, Angie tells Will that she had once imagined this very moment, but under different circumstances. Back then, she pictured the baby as hers and Will’s, not Seth’s. This tender exchange is abruptly interrupted when Seth suddenly enters the room and approaches Angie. They kiss and tell one another they love each other, putting Will in an awkward spot.

Knowing that his presence isn't needed anymore, Will takes his dog and leaves the hospital room, but not before taking one last long glance at Angie. In a way, this particular moment felt like Will was accepting that their chapter together as a couple was officially over. Honestly, it seems to be that way with Angie now deciding to have the baby and stay with Seth.

While plot details for the upcoming Will Trent season 4 are being kept hush-hush, it doesn't look like the show will revisit Will and Angie's romantic relationship anytime soon. That moment in the hospital before Seth interrupted would've been the perfect moment for Will and Angie to rekindle their romance, but that didn't happen. Even after Seth comes into the room, Angie never looks back at Will and gives him no indication that she’s conflicted or torn. Instead, her focus shifts entirely to Seth and the baby, a clear sign that she’s choosing to move forward with this new chapter in her life.

That said, it's likely that we'll see Will exploring a new romance next season. Maybe the police procedural will finally introduce pediatrician and coroner Sara Linton from the books. She's a character that book fans have been patiently waiting for the ABC series to bring into the fold. She becomes Will's love interest in the novels. Or, maybe we'll see the return of Marion, and she and Will will patch things up in the fourth season. We'll just have to wait and see!

Will Trent is set to premiere its fourth season on ABC in early 2026.
