From the moment that Boston Blue was announced by CBS, there has been a lot of interest in the Blue Bloods spin-off. Most notably, fans have wanted to know everything they could about Boston Blue's cast. As a result, a former Marvel star being cast on the show garnered headlines, and fans were very excited when it was announced that a key Blue Bloods character would be appearing in the spin-off.

Since beloved Blue Bloods characters have been showing up during episodes of Boston Blue, it has seemed safe to assume that was a trend that would continue in a major way. To be more specific, many fans likely thought it was a given that Tom Selleck would pop up on Boston Blue at some point in the future. That made the comments that Selleck recently made when he was asked about appearing on Boston Blue so shocking.

“Forgive Us Our Trespasses” – Danny and Baez team up with Danny’s old partner, Jackie Curatola (Jennifer Esposito), to find a copycat killer emulating murders from a previous case. Also, Frank and Mayor Chase (Dylan Walsh) battle over how best to handle the city’s rising homeless population; and Jamie, Eddie and Erin team up to build evidence against a previously released man who they believe is again committing criminal assault, on the 13th season finale of BLUE BLOODS, Friday, May 19

Tom Selleck surprisingly questioned whether he will appear on Boston Blue

In November 2025, Tom Selleck was interviewed by Hour Detroit about the current state of his life and career. During that conversation, Selleck continued to express shock at Blue Bloods' cancellation.

“It was a huge disappointment, and I still don’t know why CBS did it." On top of revealing how upset he was that Blue Bloods got canceled, Selleck also expressed complete admiration for his former co-stars. "I’ve been on a lot of sets that were miserable where the cast didn’t like each other, but in Blue Bloods, everyone was professional and everyone liked each other. That is so rare.”

Since Selleck was disappointed that Blue Bloods ended, and he clearly enjoyed working with his former co-star, Donnie Wahlberg, it seems like him appearing on Boston Blue would be a no-brainer. However, when he was asked about that prospect during the interview, Selleck questioned whether he would ever appear on Boston Blue.

“I don’t know if I would do Boston Blue — that’s another show. I think it’s partly my lot in life to make sure Blue Bloods has its place in television history, but I don’t think it’s my lot in life to keep playing Frank Reagan."

To be clear, Selleck certainly didn't rule out the possibility of him showing up on Boston Blue in the future. However, given that Selleck has spoken so highly about Blue Bloods for so many years, it would make perfect sense if most observers had assumed he would jump at the chance to continue portraying Frank Reagan. Instead, Selleck almost seemed to speak about that possibility like he viewed the idea of continuing to portray the character as an obligation he might be rejecting.

On top of stating that he was unsure about becoming a part of Boston Blue, Selleck also commented on what he would like to do with his career. During the Hour Detroit interview, Selleck told the outlet that he hoped to appear in a comedy in the near future. “I can’t predict the future. But I would like to do a comedy because I’ve done a few that were successful.”
