It’s hard to believe that it’s been five years since Supernatural came to an end. This series continues to find a new audience thanks to its run on Netflix, and there are conventions happening every year to make sure fans can meet the cast.
Well, it’s a show that is also close to the hearts of the stars. As we get close to marking the 20th anniversary of the pilot episode (yes, really!), the stars have shared favorite memories and how the show still affects them 20 years on.
Of course, the question of a Supernatural revival or reboot came up. Could there ever be a Supernatural season 16? Well, never say “never.”
When asked about a revival by TV Insider, Jared Padalecki noted that while he would love to see the series return, he couldn’t imagine himself doing a 22-episode season again. He’s getting older, and he’s stepped back a little bit since the end of Walker.
He did say that he could see it returning as a limited series. I’m sure there are a lot of fans out there who would love to see that, as it could end up fixing the wrong of the Supernatural series finale that some fans feel happened. How could Dean possibly die in that fashion?
"We’re all a lot older than we were 20 years ago. I don’t know if I have 22 episodes of Supernatural in me. I think a limited series would be great."
Ackles went on to talk about how Supernatural could look if it returned, especially if it ended up on a streaming platform. After all, streaming makes it possible to bring a show back as a TV-MA/R-rated show. That’s something that has happened with Criminal Minds, making that series much grittier and darker.
However, while for Criminal Minds, a darker show has worked, Ackles doesn’t think it would be right for Supernatural to go that way. It would be a disservice to the type of series that it was, capturing the hearts of teens as well as young adults.
Misha Collins did continue to share that Eric Kripke, who created the series but stepped back after the fifth season (which was the last intended for him), would make it much more horrifying if it ever came back. The good news is he already has that with Prime Video’s The Boys.
"I asked [series creator] Eric Kripke, 'If you ever did a reboot of Supernatural, what do you think it would be?' And he said he would want it to be as horrifying as possible."
Sadly, this was a series that didn’t quite end on the high note that it deserved, and part of that was due to the pandemic. Maybe a limited series is needed to right a few wrongs and give the series the send-off that it needed after 15 years of wonderfulness.
Supernatural is available to stream on Netflix.
