After St. Denis Medical premiered on NBC, the show was popular enough to get renewed for a 2nd season that will premiere soon, even though the show partially flew under the radar. When the sitcom returns, more people need to watch St. Denis Medical because the sitcom is one of the most underrated shows currently on network television.
Unfortunately, St. Denis Medical won't get the number of viewers the sitcom deserves unless more people learn what makes the series so entertaining. With that in mind, it is fascinating to look at what David Alan Grier had to say about the show. After all, the iconic comedy actor has perfectly explained what makes St. Denis Medical such a great sitcom.
David Alan Grier described what makes St. Denis Medical a special sitcom

In December 2024, NBC Insider published quotes after they spoke to David Alan Grier about St. Denis Medical's first season. One of the things that makes the sitcom so great is that it can go back and forth between being funny and affecting at a moment's notice. During his discussion with the outlet, David explained that he believes St. Denis Medical is special because of how organically the show earns laughs and emotions.
"So for me, I really feel like the humor and the comedy is organic and earned in nature. I think one person online described it as a 'serial comedy' meaning we legitimize and we earn those emotional moments and at the same time the laughter, and that’s a tricky balance, but when it’s done correctly it’s closer to real life."
Of course, many people who spend a lot of time in hospitals have extremely emotional and difficult experiences. As a result, some people may think that a show that takes place in a hospital would be more likely to be a drama like The Pitt or Chicago Med.
However, David told NBC Insider about why he believes that hospitals are a natural place to find some laughs.
"I’ve never been to a funeral in which we didn’t laugh. It’s happened every time. Even in great sadness, at some point, someone is going to say something and we end up laughing about some particular characteristic of the person or the recently departed. That’s real life, but it has to be crafted and acted in a certain way to be believable."
Based on David's comments during that interview, it seems clear that he is very happy with how St. Denis Medical has turned out as a show. Based on how entertaining the NBC sitcom is, that makes perfect sense.
St. Denis Medical returns for season 2 on NBC on Monday, Nov. 3, at 8/7 C. You can also stream the first season, and new season 2 episodes once they are available, on Peacock.
