Doc season 2 has finally started airing on Fox, and boy does the premiere leave you stunned! While the new installment takes us back to Westside Hospital to catch up with Amy (Molly Parker) and all of our other favorite doctors, there's one familiar face noticeably missing in the first episode.
Scott Wolf, who portrayed Dr. Richard Miller in the first season, does not appear in the Doc season 2 premiere. If you recall from season 1, Richard takes over the position of Chief of Internal Medicine from Amy after she suffers an accident that wipes out eight years of her memory. Due to her memory loss, Amy is deemed unfit to return to her former role and is forced to start over in the hospital as an intern.
What's even worse is that Richard didn't just take her position. He also tried to cover up his involvement in a patient’s death by putting the blame on Amy. However, Amy ends up learning the truth in the season 1 finale after talking to the patient's wife.
Richard was treating an elderly patient when he accidentally administered the wrong medication, causing the patient to go into cardiac arrest and ultimately die. His mind wasn't in the right place at the time due to finding out that his mentally ill son had been arrested.
After figuring out that Richard was the one at fault, Amy informs Michael (Omar Metwally) and the hospital board. They then pull Richard into an office and tell him that his medical license has been suspended. The last time we see Richard in the season 1 finale, he's packing up his stuff to leave the hospital. But does this mean we'll never see this character again? Here's what we know.
There's a chance Scott Wolf could return as Richard in Doc season 2
Back in July 2025, Doc showrunners Barbie Kligman and Hank Steinberg spoke with Us Weekly and stated that Wolf's Richard character played a pivotal role in season 1. They also hinted that his story might not be over yet. This was our first real hint that we could potentially see Richard return in future episodes.
“Scott’s Dr. Richard Miller was such an integral part of season 1 with such a rich and complicated history with Amy. Pretty sure that’s not the last we’ve seen of him...”
Then, in August 2025, Steinberg spoke with TV Insider and teased that while Richard won't appear at the beginning of season 2, the show's creative team has a clever plan to potentially bring him back later in the season. Steinberg also teased that Richard could return with a new attitude or perspective.
“I’ll just say that we adore Scott and we know the audience does, too, and we have a pretty clever way to potentially bring him back in the back half of the season and reconstituted in a different form of attitude. So that should be pretty fun."
Given everything Richard went through at the end of season 1 with his medical license suspended, it would make sense why he might come back changed. He seemed pretty remorseful after Amy brought his misdeeds to Michael and the board. Perhaps his potential return could focus on seeking redemption, rebuilding relationships, and proving that he can be a better doctor and colleague despite his past mistakes.
What we do know is that Wolf is down to reprise the role. He told TV Insider that working on Doc had been an extremely positive and meaningful experience for him. He even praised the writers, producers, cast, and crew, calling them the best team he’s ever worked with. So, that's good to know.
“There’s nothing more that I would love than to be a part of this show. It’s really special. The writers, the producers, our cast and crew are best I’ve ever worked with. I’ve worked with some great people, and this a really special experience.”
While Richard’s return isn’t guaranteed, both the showrunners and Wolf himself are open to it. We'd say there's a good chance fans will see him back at Westside Hospital further into the season.
The second episode of Doc season 2 is slated to air on Fox on Sept. 30.
