We're not trying to freak any of you Abbott Elementary fans out. Or myself for that matter as a fan myself. Though it kind of sounds like ABC comedy series might be nearing its end sooner than we thought it would based on some recent comments from creator and lead actress, Quinta Brunson.
In an interview with Bustle, the star spoke about how she's so appreciative and doesn't take likely to the fact that the series has been running successfully, on network television no less, for five seasons. This refers to the fact that Abbott Elementary season 5 is coming in just a few months in fall 2025. She's also so happy that viewers continue to tune in and are interested. It's a great show, of course we are!
However, she does go on to talk about the cast and their want to go on and showcase their talent somewhere else. She didn't specify who exactly, though it sounds like it's more than one person. Here's what she told the news outlet:
"I have cast members who would love to pursue other projects, and our show is very time-consuming. We shoot about seven months out of the year. That can stop people from being able to do a lot of other things. Right now, I’m receiving scripts, and waiting for that moment that feels like, 'Oh man, this is exactly what I've been looking for.' Abbott has been so successful, and I want to use that success to get other people's projects off the ground."

It seems like Brunson is even talking about herself as well. Though what is a bit reassuring about her statement is the fact that she hasn't found a script or project that she feels is enough to perhaps put a final end to the school year. But I do fear that day is coming, and it's much closer than we think. Is it possible that season 5 might be the last season for the sitcom. Or, perhaps even season 6 if ABC renews the comedy?
It can be really hard when a beloved series goes on for multiple seasons. Of course it makes us fans happy to have our show on for so long. Though it's very normal for actors to start getting restless and a bit tired from being on the same job for so long. This isn't mean to be in a bad way. It's just that they're ready for the next transition in their career, and we can't fault them for that.
I mean, look. Highly successful comedies like Friends, Modern Family, and The Big Bang Theory went on for 10 or more seasons. With how popular Abbott is and how well it does for the network, I don't see why it can't go on just as long. That is if the cast is up for it. Time will tell, and hopefully there could perhaps be some sort of workaround to allow those actors who want to pursue other projects some extra time to do them when not filming the school-centric sitcom.
Season 5 does make its debut in the fall, though you can see the cast and characters much earlier in the next Abbott Elementary and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia crossover episode. It will be the FX series' season 17 premiere on Wednesday, July 9, 2025 at 9 p.m. ET. You can also stream the episode on Hulu the next day. Be aware it will be a much more mature version of events, but still one you don't want to miss!
