After a stunning beginning to its second season, ABC procedural comedy-drama High Potential continues to prove its power. The series has been dominating in the ratings, even achieving a remarkable feat that hadn't been reached in over two decades. Because of its success, the show's cast has been in-demand, with another star taking on a new role on Netflix.
Obviously, the cast isn't new to pulling double on two shows at the same time. Series star and executive producer Kaitlin Olson leads the cast of High Potential, but she also remains in the cast of the long-running FX comedy series It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Judy Reyes, who plays Lieutenant Soto, has also been filming the new Scrubs reboot this season.
Now, we've learned that new High Potential season 2 series regular Steve Howey will be staying put out west, as the actor joined the cast of Netflix's high romantic Western drama series Ransom Canyon for its own second season. He'll be playing a key recurring guest role that could definitely stir the pot on the series, but will there be any impacts to his role on the ABC drama?

Steve Howey joins Ransom Canyon season 2 cast on Netflix
Howey will appear in Ransom Canyon season 2 as Levi, the half-brother of Josh Duhamel's powerful but chaotic rancher Staten Kirkland. Per a character description shared by Deadline, Levi appears to be different from Staten in that he's a "mountain man" who prefers to live off the land. Staten's a capable rancher, but he lives in a very comfortable mansion on his property.
While Howey's role is described as a recurring guest star, it's expected to impact his work on High Potential at all. Since he's recurring in Ransom Canyon, he likely won't appear in all 10 episodes. In fact, his role could be contained to an episode or two, allowing him to leave Albuquerque, where the Netflix series films, to return to Los Angeles to complete work on High Potential.
The second season of the ABC hit hasn't wrapped production on its 18-episode order ahead of the season's return from its midseason break on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2026. Howey's role in the procedural also hasn't been too demanding quite yet, which allows him to balance time between the two shows. (Not to mention, he also wrapped a recurring role in Prime Video's upcoming Off Campus series.)
In High Potential season 2, Steve Howey was added to the main cast as Nick Wagner, the new captain of the LAPD's Major Crimes division. The team expected Soto to gain the promotion, leading to some mixed feelings about Nick, particularly from Morgan. Lately, the two have had some sparks between them that could potentially grow in the second part of the season.
High Potential season 2 resumes on Tuesday, Jan. 6 at 9/8c on ABC.
