Fox's new medical comedy coming our way in the midseason schedule, Best Medicine, continues to round out its series regular cast with some great actors! The network recently shared that Abbott Elementary's frequent guest star Josh Segarra is set to play one of the main characters, Sheriff Mark Mylow. And now, we've got another fan-favorite star from Young Sheldon ready to take on a major role.
The beloved and strong-willed Meemaw (Connie) from Young Sheldon, Annie Potts, has been cast in the upcoming one-hour Fox series, per Deadline. She joins Segarra, Abigail Spencer who plays local school teacher Louisa, and her onscreen nephew Josh Charles, taking on the role of Martin.
The show is centered around Dr. Martin Best (Charles), a very smart surgeon who moves from the big city of Boston to bring his skills to a small fishing village on the east coast. He's closed off, is dealing with the development of a new phobia and "deep-seated psychological issues," and can be quite rude. This probably won't go well in a small town. And no matter how hard he tries to avoid it, they residents still get him involved in their personal issues as well. Though perhaps they're exactly what he needs.

As mentioned above, Potts is confirmed to play Aunt Joan, who is Martin's aunt, per Deadline. I guess that's why he chooses to move there? It's also where the doctor spent his childhood summers. The character is described to be a "lobster woman who still goes out every day on her boat." She doesn't let anyone stand in her way, or tell her what she can and can't do. Though through it all, she also has a big heart. As big as the sea that she loves.
The news outlet shares that she also loves her nephew, though the two lost contact years ago. There's some secrets she's hiding, that led to the two not staying in touch. Though perhaps with her stubborn nature, she'll be able to build a relationship with Martin once again.
Based on Aunt Joan's character description, I think Potts is perfect for the role! Some of the traits of the character that have been teased are very similar to the actress' Young Sheldon character as well. What we loved so much about Connie is the fact that she knows how to take care of herself, does what she wants, but loves her family so very much.
Joan is definitely giving off Meemaw vibes, though maybe a little more dark and dramatic with whatever secrets she's hiding. I'm really excited about this casting addition, and can't wait to see her in the new project!
An episode count and exact release date have not been shared yet. Though the show is set to begin filming this summer in upstate New York. Stay tuned to GeekSided as we continue to bring you more updates about the medical comedy drama on Fox.
