Since the Blue Bloods spinoff was first announced, excitement has been building among fans. The upcoming CBS series, titled Boston Blue, has been steadily gaining momentum, fueled by a steady stream of casting news. With production rumored to start on July 10, it is not surprising that more information is beginning to surface. Now, there's talk of potential cameo appearances from original Blue Bloods cast members.
Boston Blue comes from Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis (L.A.'s Finest). It serves as the first official spinoff of the long-running CBS hit Blue Bloods, expanding the franchise into new territory. Fan favorite Donnie Wahlberg reprises his role as Detective Danny Reagan, but instead of patrolling the streets of New York City, Danny finds himself navigating the challenges of a new police department in Boston. Together with his new partner, Detective Lena Silvers, Danny must adapt to unfamiliar terrain while tackling complex cases across the city.
Sonequa Martin-Green (Star Trek: Discovery, The Walking Dead) joins Wahlberg in the cast, playing Lena Silvers. Also included in the Boston Blue cast are Gloria Reuben, Ernie Hudson, Maggie Lawson, and Marcus Scribner.
Since the casting of Scribner in mid-June, no new actors have been announced to join the show. However, Wahlberg has now got fans excited all over again after hinting at the possibility of Blue Bloods characters making guest appearances in the spinoff. In a recent interview with Parade, the news outlet asked Wahlberg about cameos from some of the other Reagan family members and even offered some creative ideas on how the spinoff can make it happen. Parade suggested that characters could appear via Zoom calls, FaceTime chats, or even make in-person guest appearances.
Donnie Wahlberg responded positively to these suggestions, pointing out that New York and Boston are geographically close, making it realistic (both story-wise and logistically) for characters from Blue Bloods to appear in Boston Blue. However, he didn't actually confirm that there will be any cameos just yet. Instead, he teased the possibility and emphasized that Blue Bloods still holds deep significance for everyone involved in the spinoff, including himself and his new co-star Martin-Green.
"New York and Boston are really close. They’re not that far apart. I like the way you asked the question. You covered a lot of possible ways for people to drop in on us. Yeah, Blue Bloods is important to the audience, it’s important to me, it’s important to Sonequa [Martin-Green, Danny’s new partner]. She’s a Blue Bloods fan. She’s my partner, and she’s a Blue Bloods fan. She wants to keep that legacy alive, as well.”
We're keeping our fingers crossed that Boston Blue manages to find a way to weave in beloved Reagan family members, even if just for a brief visit. That way, fans can continue enjoying the legacy of Blue Bloods while also embracing the new characters, stories, and setting that the spinoff brings to the table.
Boston Blue will start airing on CBS this fall. We'll return with the premiere date once it is revealed.
