With Boston Blue set to make its premiere on CBS sometime this fall, we're hearing of some exciting casting news that’s sure to get longtime TV fans buzzing. ER alum Gloria Reuben has officially joined the Blue Bloods spinoff in a pivotal role. She joins already-announced cast members Donnie Wahlberg, Sonequa Martin-Green, Ernie Hudson, and Maggie Lawson.

Boston Blue is developed by Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis, who also co-showrun and executive produce the series. The police procedural brings back Wahlberg from Blue Bloods. He reprises his role as Danny Reagan. Danny is a former NYPD detective who relocates to join the Boston Police Department. While there, he’s partnered with Detective Lena Silver (Martin-Green), the oldest daughter in a well-known family of law enforcement professionals.

Reuben has been cast as a series regular in the series, meaning we can expect her to appear in most, if not all, episodes of the season and play a central role in the show's ongoing storylines. She takes on the role of Mae Silver, the District Attorney of Boston and matriarch of the Silver family.

Her character is described as being a widow and someone who tries to put family before work, despite her high-pressure job. Mae is also a strong decision-maker who stands by her choices. She is the mother of Martin-Green's Lena Silver character and the stepmother of Lawson's Sarah Silver character. She also has a son named Jonah, who is described as being a rookie officer. Her father, Reverend Peters, is played by Hudson.

"Reuben will play Mae Silver, Boston’s District Attorney and the matriarch of a blended family of law enforcement professionals. The widow of a judge who was murdered on the courthouse steps, Mae endeavors to put family ahead of work whenever possible. Her daughter is Lena, and her stepdaughter Sarah (Lawson) is the Police Superintendent. Her son Jonah is a rookie cop; her father is Reverend Peters (Hudson). Mae is accustomed to making decisions and standing by them." - Deadline

Reuben is in no way new to the Blue Bloods universe. She previously had a short two-episode stint on Blue Bloods, playing the role of ATF Agent Rachel Weber. She’s also shared the screen with co-star Martin-Green before, in the comedy-drama film My Dead Friend Zoe. That said, it'll be interesting to see her take on a much larger, more complex role in Boston Blue.

The only Silver family member who hasn't been cast yet is Jonah. We'll likely hear an announcement soon about an actor taking on this rookie cop role as casting continues to ramp up ahead of Boston Blue’s fall premiere. A premiere date has not been set yet, but new episodes are confirmed to start airing on CBS on Fridays at 10/9c. As new details about this upcoming spinoff are released, we'll make sure to return and share everything we learned. But for now, you must stay tuned to GeekSided!
