Despite being presumed dead in Watson, Sherlock Holmes is going to be alive and well. Robert Carlyle is taking on the iconic role, and now we know when the character will appear.

When Watson first premiered, we learned that Sherlock died, along with Moriarty. However, it was soon clear that Moriarty wasn’t dead after all, and he quickly became a foe for Dr. Watson without Watson even realizing it at first.

However, the initial plan was for Holmes’ death to be real. That changed as news about Watson season 2 came out, and now it’s time for everything to potentially change.

We won’t wait long to meet Sherlock Holmes in Watson season 2

As a recurring guest star, Carlyle isn’t going to be in every episode of Watson season 2. He’s likely to be like Randall Park’s Moriarty, who appeared in the odd episode, but his presence was felt in every single one. There were others doing his bidding, meaning his name would repeatedly come up. So, we can probably expect something similar with Holmes.

What we do know is that Sherlock Holmes will appear in the Watson season 2 premiere. The synopsis for the episode is out, and the end of that synopsis tells us that “Sherlock Homes resurfaces after being presumed dead.”

Why would he resurface at this point? It’s interesting that it’s happened just as Moriarty has been taken out for good. At the end of Watson season 1, Watson was able to use Moriarty’s DNA to infect Moriarty with a custom-made virus that killed him and saved the Croft twins. While he certainly seemed to die on screen, there are questions about whether he could come back in some way.

Is this the storyline that brings Sherlock back? Could he have been in hiding because of the threat that Moriarty posed? Knowing how skilled Watson is as a doctor, it would make sense to leave Watson to handle Moriarty before coming back.

Mary’s mother comes into the story in the Watson season 2 premiere

The story isn’t just going to be focused on Sherlock, though. The Watson season 2 premiere will offer a chance to deepen Mary’s storyline, bringing more of her family into the mix. We’ll get to meet her mother, who accidentally poisons herself.

It turns out that Mary’s mom has a rare form of dementia that’s progressing at an impossible speed. This is going to be heartbreaking for Mary (and likely Watson), but it offers Watson and the fellows a chance to solve a new mystery. They’ll do whatever they can to get to the bottom of the dementia as well as the poisoning, but is there hope?
