If you miss Abbott Elementary and can't wait to see Janine and co. back, then you're in luck! Season 5 of the ABC comedy series debuts in fall 2025, but FXX is treating us fans to a new episode of the series ahead of the premiere. How you might ask? Well, it's thanks to a little something called a crossover episode.

In case you need a refresher or didn't know, Abbott's season 4 episode 9, "Volunteers," was actually a crossover installment between the sitcom and FXX's It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. With both shows taking place in Philly at the same time, in terms of timeline and setting, this was a no brainer. Even though Sunny is way more raunchy!

Well, Abbott Elementary got to showcase their version of events, and now it's Always Sunny's turn to do the same. Be sure to tune in to the season 17 premiere of the FXX comedy tonight, July 9, 2025, starting at 9 p.m. ET to see your favorite school teachers and staff a little earlier than this fall.

If you don't have access to the network through cable or a platform like Fubo or YouTube TV, you'll also be able to stream the episode on Hulu the next day, July 10, starting at 12 a.m. PT / 3 a.m. ET. So what can you expect to see in the next Abbott/Sunny crossover?

Well, apparently there's some unseen footage the documentary crew captured the week of the gang volunteering. So a few months later, our fave Principal Ava Coleman walks us through season 17 episode 1, "The Gang F***s Up Abbott Elementary," according to the synopsis.

The footage is set to reveal what shenanigans volunteers Charlie, Mac, Dee, Dennis, and Frank were up to during their time serving community service. I'm most curious about Dennis as he didn't want to be filmed, so wasn't featured as much. So with this episode, we get to see more of what he was doing as well. Based on the promotional image above, it seems to be something to do with coffee?

Some of the previously released sneak peeks and trailers reveal the gang wanting to start a boy band too. Ha! Just be mindful that It's Always Sunny is rated TV-MA, and definitely earns its mature rating. So there may be some content in there that is a bit much for the average Abbott Elementary viewer.

I just think it's so cool that these two epic shows were able to do these two crossover episodes. Plus with the release of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 17 being in the summer, it gives us a bit of the Abbott fix we need before season 5 airs this fall.

The next Abbott Elementary and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia crossover episode premieres Wednesday, July 9, 2025 on FXX. Stream the next day on Hulu.
