Whenever there's a spinoff of something that is already beloved by fans, there's bound to be mixed reactions. We're seeing that now with the upcoming 911 spinoff series 911: Nashville. ABC recently released the show's first teaser trailer, and most people seemed to enjoy it. However, some 911 fans didn't waste any time voicing their disappointment.
911: Nashville is a procedural drama created by Ryan Murphy, Tim Minear, and Rashad Raisani. It serves as the second 911 spinoff, coming after 911: Lone Star. Chris O'Donnell, who many may recognize from his previous role as G. Callen in NCIS: Los Angeles, takes on the lead role of Captain Don Sharpe. Don is described as a skilled firefighter and rodeo rider who runs a firehouse with his son in Nashville.
O'Donnell is joined in the cast by many other talented actors such as Jessica Capshaw, LeAnn Rimes, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, Hailey Kilgore, Michael Provost, Juani Feliz, and Hunter McVey. Like the original series, 911: Nashville will focus on the high-pressure lives of emergency responders as they race against time to save lives.
On June 17, ABC released a thrilling 30-second animated teaser for the upcoming procedural drama, possibly giving viewers a glimpse of the show’s first crisis. I personally found the teaser to be both creative and engaging. A teaser for a live-action series isn't usually animated, and this one stood out with its impressive animation quality. But I guess some people thought otherwise.
If you just browse through the official 911: Nashville Instagram page, you'll come across a post they shared of the teaser. But it's the comment section that will really catch your attention. It's full of a mix of positive comments about the spinoff as well as some not-so-happy fans expressing disappointment and frustration.
Weirdly enough, most of the negative comments aren't even necessarily about the show itself. Some 911 fans are still upset about the writers' decision to kill off fan-favorite character Bobby Nash in season 8, so they're taking it out on the new spinoff. One fan in the comment section even says, "Only Nash I care about is BOBBY NASH."
I'll give it to them. That was a funny play on words, and I can understand their frustration. However, it's important to separate the two shows and judge 911: Nashville on its own merits rather than through the lens of past storylines. Some people in the comments were even saying that they won't watch the spinoff because of Bobby Nash's death.
But who knows? 911: Nashville might end up being really good. It's best to give the show at least a chance before writing it off. You might be surprised by what it brings to the table. But at the same time, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. If they don't want to watch 911: Nashville because of how things ended for a character in the original series, that’s totally their choice.
The cameras have officially started rolling on 911: Nashville. The first season is confirmed to begin airing on ABC this fall.
