If you thought you'd seen the last of Kayce Dutton and other Yellowstone characters, you might want to think again. It sounds like there will be at least a few Yellowstone characters who will appear in Y: Marshals, the new CBS spinoff starring Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton.
According to a report from People, Grimes opened up about Y: Marshals, which starts filming this fall in Utah, and revealed that there will be some "familiar faces" on the Y: Marshals cast.
Grimes was answering about how Y: Marshals feels after the events of the Yellowstone finale and, at the time, saying goodbye to the character. Here's what he said, via People:
"It will be weird. There's going to be some familiar faces, but there's going to be a lot of new faces too, so we'll see how that all feels."
It's still too early to know which Yellowstone characters Grimes is referring to when it comes to the Y: Marshals cast. We have to assume that Kelly Reilly, who played Beth Dutton, will not be a regular in Y: Marshals. Reilly will be starring in a new spinoff, Dutton Ranch, with Cole Hauser, who plays Rip Wheeler. I'm not ruling out a cameo or a guest role down the line, though. They are Duttons after all. Can they really stay out of each other's business for good? We'll have to wait and see.
If I were to guess, I would assume that Monica and Tate Dutton, Kayce's wife and son, will be back for Y: Marshals. If that's the case, we should see Kelsey Asbille and Brecken Merrill back as those characters, but we could also see new cast members playing those roles or explanations for why those characters are not part of Y: Marshals. We really don't know anything at this point.
In addition to commenting on the cast, Grimes did reveal a little bit about the story, why it interested him, and what's next for Kayce. Here's what he told People:
""We definitely wanted to make sure to give it a real story and make it interesting and make it believable. If it was just like, 'well, he's happy' — we're just going to watch him be happy? That's not very cool. But I'll say this, the idea that was pitched to me is very, very good and very interesting and it really roped me in and I think it will rope the audience in as well."
There's not a lot that we can pull from that, but I do think it's safe to say that Kayce is going to be going through it, at least somewhat, in Y: Marshals. We're not seeing a character who has everything together, all the answers, or anything like that. It should be an exciting, fresh start for the character, for sure.
As for when Y: Marshals will premiere, we're probably looking at a spring 2026 premiere. Technically, it's slated for a midseason premiere, which could be as early as January, but it's unlikely that the series will be ready to premiere that early. Instead, I think March or April is probably a more likely release window for the series.
We'll let you know more about the new CBS series from Spencer Hudnut when we find out. Stay tuned!
