Luke Grimes' Yellowstone days might be over, but that doesn't mean he's leaving Kayce Dutton behind. Instead, he's just moving his character's story to a new network!

According to a report from Deadline, CBS has officially picked up Y: Marshalls, a new Yellowstone spinoff that will continue the stories of Kayce, the character Grimes played for five seasons on Yellowstone.

CBS did not announce the official release date for Y: Marshals yet, but it appears to be lined up for a midseason premiere on Sunday nights at 9 p.m. on the network. That's a great timeslot for a show like this. It's easy to see the potential for this series, especially with CBS able to run promos for it throughout the second half of the NFL season.

Throughout and following the writers' and actors' strike, CBS actually aired the first two seasons of Yellowstone. When the Yellowstone season 5 part 2 premiere was ready to go, CBS also aired that episode to build up some extended reach for the series, as well. I wonder if that was a good experiment for CBS to see how a show like that could perform on the network instead of Paramount Network, which obviously has limited reach.

In Y: Marshals, Kayce will be “combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence," according to the Deadline report.

Although Yellowstone has come to an end, it appears the age of the Yellowstone spinoff is just beginning. In addition to CBS picking up Y: Marshals, Dutton Ranch is already in the works on Paramount+. The series stars Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser as Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler. It was just revealed that Dutton Ranch will be released in November on Paramount+, according to a report from Fansided's Show Snob.

Deadline also confirmed that Spencer Hudnut is the showrunner of the new series, and it will have a sizeable budget to work with, which is obviously super exciting, as well.

While not the biggest neo-Western fan, I am curious to see how audiences respond to Y: Marshals. There's obviously a built-in fanbase for those who love Grimes, Kayce, and Yellowstone, but I have to assume that this is also going to introduce the world of Yellowstone to new audiences. Just because Yellowstone had a few episodes air on CBS, it doesn't mean that new fans actually tuned in. Now, with a new show like this, there are probably more than a few people at CBS who have really high hopes for a drama like this.

According to a report from Elle, production on Y: Marshalls starts this summer. As we get closer to the start of production, we should learn a lot more about the new series, too, including the cast. As of right now, we don't know who is lined up to star alongside Grimes in the series. I have a feeling we're going to get a good, big cast for this show. There have to be some good characters for Grimes to play off of. It also makes sense to assume that more than a few Yellowstone cameos are possible, too, but we'll just have to wait and see how it all shakes out.

We'll share more news about Y: Marshals as soon as we find out! Stay tuned!
