Will Trent season 4 is set to start airing on ABC sometime early next year, and fans are trying their best to remain patient. However, recent comments from one of the show's stars have sparked speculation that a key character introduced in season 3 may not return.

Ramón Rodríguez, who stars in the leading role of GBI special agent Will Trent in the hit police procedural, spoke with the LA Times in a new interview and shared his experience with working on the show as well as some insights into what fans can possibly expect from the upcoming fourth season.

He acknowledged that many plot threads were left unresolved in season 3, such as Angie's pregnancy, Amanda's hospitalization, and the introduction of Will's father. He shares that these key plot points could be explored more in Will Trent season 4. He also mentions the possibility of a new romance for Will, and that right there is what leads us to believe that a main character from the third season might not be coming back.

"We’re about to begin these serious conversations. There were some pretty serious cliffhangers at the end of Season 3, where we find out Angie Polaski (Erika Christensen) is pregnant, and Will is definitely not the father, so that’s gonna be something to explore. Amanda Wagner (Sonja Sohn), who is a maternal figure for Will, is in the hospital bed. We just discovered his dad, [Sheriff Caleb Roussard], which we don’t know too much about, so I’d want to know more about the character and what happened with the mom. There’s just so many questions that we will get to explore — I mean, is there new love in Will’s life?"

Who is this mystery character that we're talking about? It's Assistant District Attorney Marion Alba, played by Gina Rodriguez. Marion is introduced in the season 3 premiere, and while at first she and Will have a strictly professional relationship, it eventually develops into something much more and the two start a romantic relationship.

However, their relationship goes south after Will becomes involved in the accidental shooting of a 14-year-old boy while on the job. Due to an insensitive comment Marion made about the situation, a grief-stricken Will begins to close himself off emotionally, creating a rift between them. When they finally meet up, Marion tells Will she loves him, but he doesn't respond in the same way. With their relationship in a complicated place, Marion decides to put things on pause rather than ending it for good.

Will is a single man at the end of the third season, with no potential romantic interests on the horizon. However, there was hope that he and Marion might reunite down the line since Marion decided to temporarily break things off with him. Perhaps even in Will Trent season 4. But now with Rodríguez mentioning a new potential love interest for Will in the fourth season, we're left wondering if Marion’s storyline might be coming to an end or if the show is simply expanding Will’s romantic options.

In a previous interview with TVLine, series co-showrunner Liz Heldens shared that she isn’t ruling out the possibility of Gina Rodriguez returning as Marion in season 4. Still, nothing has been officially confirmed. At this point, there’s a chance she could reappear, but just as much of a chance that she won’t. We'll just have to wait and see once the casting announcements for season 4 start.
