Building the Band on Netflix is similar to The Voice

So as I mentioned above, those of you who like the concept of The Voice on NBC, you're in for a treat. That's because in this new competition show, each contestant is placed in their own pod/booth for the auditions. Then, they actually have the control of, as the title suggests, building their own band.

So because they're separated, the only thing they have to go off of on whether they want this person in their band is their voice. If they do like them, then they press a button to show their interest. Just like the NBC series where the judges don't see the contestants before they choose them to join their team. Check out a first look video that illustrates the concept of the series below!

As you can see, it's sort of a Live is Blind situation too because the contestants won't meet each other until the full band is formed, and they're ready to work together to impress the judges. They'll all definitely need to vibe to make this work. It's still not known just how many total contestants there will be and how big each band is allowed to be as well. I wonder if it's a fixed number, or some could have fewer or more members than others. Though they'll all need to work together because there can only be one band left standing at the end.

Those sharing their knowledge and expertise on the judging panel are Nicole Scherzinger, Kelly Rowland, and guest judge the late Liam Payne who was able to film his part in Building the Band before his passing in October 2024. When the series was still in production, Netflix had paused work on it at the time. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Payne's family is in support of the streamer sharing the former One Direction member's parts in the competition series. AJ McLean will serve as host.

Building the Band premieres Wednesday, July 9, 2025 on Netflix.
