The Vampire Diaries creator Julie Plec may be busy with her new show that just debuted on Prime Video, We Were Liars, and developing more projects. But it's clear that TVD is still in her heart and mind. The franchise came to an end in 2022, though she still has plans for more should an opportunity arise.
The creator recently spoke to TVLine and revealed that there isn't just one idea, but apparently multiple ideas for another The Vampire Diaries spin-off series, which aired on The CW, in her head. We haven't had anything from Mystic Falls for three years now, and clearly she misses it and wants to tell more. Here's what Plec told the news outlet:
“I have had ideas for more Vampire Diaries stories since we were doing the last Vampire Diaries story. All anybody has to do is ask, and I will be there.”
She didn't explain what ideas she has swirling in her mind, though I'm sure they're all good ones. It's hard to speculate what they could be about too since the last show, Legacies, came to a satisfying end. Typically, I would say that we've had enough from the franchise. The Vampire Diaries ran for eight seasons, followed by The Originals for five, and finally Legacies went on for four seasons before getting cancelled.
However, we live in the day and age of constant reboots, revivals, and spin-offs. If everyone else can do it, then Plec and this universe definitely can too. I don't see why these stories can't continue just live so many others that seemed finished.
The flagship series focused on Elena and vampire brothers Stefan and Damon. The direct spin-off of the supernatural drama took us to New Orleans with Klaus and the rest of the complicated Mikaelson family. As for Legacies, which was a direct sequel to The Originals. We went back to Mystic Falls where Klaus and Hayley's daughter Hope decided to attend supernatural boarding school, The Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted.
Since saying goodbye to TVD, Plec has created Vampire Academy on Peacock and The Girls on the Bus for HBO Max. Unfortunately, both of these projects were cancelled after just one season. We Were Liars hasn't been renewed yet, though there was pretty positive response from viewers and it could get a second season.
The good news is that even if a spin-off doesn't happen, Plec and Stefan Salvatore actor Paul Wesley are reuniting for a new series at Netflix! The working title is currently Confessions and there haven't been many updates about it since 2022 when news first broke the two would be reuniting. Hopefully some sort of update comes about it soon.
