When you think of the best ABC shows, Grey's Anatomy will probably be the first series that comes to mind. Given its iconic status and impressive 21-season run so far, it’s easy to see why. But there’s another series that’s quietly been building a case for the top spot. This show is relatively new, having first come out in 2023, but it's already showing that it has the depth, intensity, and storytelling power to rival any long-running hit. That show is none other than Will Trent.
Book readers will recognize this series right away as it is based on the bestselling book series of the same name by Karin Slaughter. Liz Heldens (The Big Leap, The Passage) teamed up with Daniel T. Thomsen (Batwoman, Once Upon a Time) to create this police procedural show, and it has seen much success since its debut. Before the first season had even finished airing, ABC renewed the show for a second installment. The same happened again when it came to the season 3 and 4 renewals. ABC announced the renewals ahead of the second and third seasons wrapping up.

That said, I think it is safe to say that the network has tremendous faith in Will Trent’s potential, backing it with early renewals that show their commitment to the series. In my opinion, these early renewals were great decisions. Will Trent has only gotten better and stronger with each season. Its popularity continues to grow, and its fan base is becoming more dedicated, proving that this relatively new show has all the ingredients to become a lasting hit for ABC.
With its current trajectory, Will Trent is shaping up to be one of the network’s flagship dramas for the foreseeable future. Move out of the way, Law & Order and NCIS. There’s a new police procedural in town that’s quickly gaining traction and has already become one of the most talked-about and beloved shows on television. We're keeping our fingers crossed that Will Trent gets the opportunity to go on for just as many seasons as those popular long-running shows or even surpass them.
Will Trent stars Ramón Rodríguez as Will Trent, a highly skilled but unconventional agent with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation who uses his keen intellect and street smarts to crack complex crimes while confronting a challenging personal history. Rodríguez is joined in the cast by other talented actors such as Erika Christensen, Iantha Richardson, Jake McLaughlin, Sonja Sohn, Gina Rodriguez, and others.
There have been three seasons so far, with an upcoming fourth season set to premiere on ABC in early 2026. Since previous installments have first started airing in January or February, fans can likely expect the new season to debut around the same time next year. We'll get back to you with the official premiere date as soon as it is announced.
