It’s not taken that long of asking for Stephen Colbert. He’s finally landed a guest role on Elsbeth season 3, and it’s a role that seems made for him.

The news comes after the announcement that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will end in May 2026. CBS cited financial issues, as Colbert’s contract comes up for renewal at that time. It’s concerning for late night TV, as Colbert’s show was the best of all in terms of linear ratings.

Stephen Colbert will move onto Elsbeth

According to TVLine, Colbert will join the Carrie Preston series in a guest role as the talk show host in the fictional series “Way Late With Scotty Bristol.” Of course, we know that guest stars are often either the murder victim or the murder suspect, and with a name like Colbert, we’re sure he’s going to end up being the murder suspect that Elsbeth will need to prove did it.

Little is known about the role, except for who he will play. We don’t even know which episode he will appear on, but it does seem like this role was created specifically for him. After all, why not tap into what he’s known best for: a popular late-night talk show.

Of course, this probably isn’t due to his cancellation, but the announcement of it makes sense. Considering production schedules, the role was likely crafted ahead of time, but now Elsbeth can really use the cancellation of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert as part of the marketing material.

Stephen Colbert has always wanted to appear on the series

While it makes a lot of sense for Colbert to play the murder suspect, he has made it clear that he would love to play the murder victim. He wanted to be the body “found behind the pile of lettuce boxes.”

This was a statement he made to Elsbeth star Wendall Pierce while he appeared on The Late Show to promote the CBS dramedy. Pierce made it clear that he knew people who could make something like that work, and it looks like everyone is almost being true to their word.

Now we just wait to see what happens. Elsbeth season 3 will premiere on a special night on Sunday, Oct. 12 at 9:30 p.m. ET/9 p.m. PT due to the NFL game that night. It will then move to Thursdays at the usual time of 10 p.m. ET/PT. Get ready for a fun-packed Thursday night as usual, with the entire lineup remaining the same as the 2024-2025 TV season.
