As any Elsbeth fan can tell you, one of the most beloved aspects of CBS’s hit series is the incredible guest stars the show has managed to bring into the fold.
Across the first two seasons of the show, the creative team has managed to land some unforgettable guest stars. You truly never know who might pop up in an episode, be it as the killer of the week or a witness Elsbeth crosses paths with during her latest investigation. There have been so many wonderful guest stars, but there are definitely some who have stuck out more than others, including season 2 guest star Ioan Gruffudd.
Gruffudd guest-starred in season 2, episode 11, “Tiny Town,” playing the role of Scottish musician Angus Doyle, who crossed paths with Elsbeth after he witnessed a murder through a special art installation which linked his tiny seaside town in Scotland to a part of Manhattan. Angus and Elsbeth quickly hit it off as they worked together to catch the killer, with their partnership turning romantic as the pair got flirty, which made sense given the episode served as a Valentine’s Day episode.
The episode ended with Angus making his way to New York City to meet Elsbeth in person and the pair enjoyed a romantic time before he had to head back home. It seemed like that was perhaps the last we might see of Gruffudd’s charming musician, but it seems like the creative team behind the show are hoping they might be able to bring Angus back sometime in season 3!
“All I’ll say is, I hope it’s not closed. I would love to have Ioan [Gruffudd] back on, and I think he’s interested. I would love to have him come back and visit New York again or take the show to Scotland,” showrunner Jonathan Tolins revealed in an interview with ScreenRant.
Interestingly, Tolins seemed to hint that they don’t have any active plans for Elsbeth to “pair up” and enter a committed relationship; however, it seems there is a strong interest in having Angus back again and at least allowing for some fun flirtations to continue between he and Elsbeth – something we’d more than be happy with!
“Although I will say that we are not looking to sort of pair up Elsbeth. I think one of the things about our show is that this is a woman who’s reinvented herself, who is divorced, and is really focused on her work and not looking to be permanently attached to another person. And I think that’s fresh and true to the character. But yes, we love Angus, and I would love to see him back on.”
Carrie Preston has a unique ability to spark chemistry with any scene partner, bringing such fun and diverse dynamics with the show’s many guest performers. However, we’d be lying if we didn’t say her chemistry with Gruffudd was next level! We’d give anything to see the pair reunite and get to see more of Elsbeth and Angus together on our screens next season, even if there aren’t going to be plans for a more long-term relationship between the two.
We’ll happily accept a friends-with-benefits dynamic so long as it means we get to see the two phenomenal talents playing off one another on Elsbeth!
