Doc season 1 introduced viewers to Dr. Amy Larsen (Molly Parker), a brilliant physician whose life gets turned upside down after a devastating car accident leaves her with amnesia. After losing eight years of her memory, Amy is forced to rebuild her career and relationships while uncovering shocking truths about her past.
But while trying to uncover her memories, Amy finds herself clashing with the new Chief of Internal Medicine, Dr. Richard Miller (Scott Wolf), who attempts to frame her for a fatal medical mistake to protect his own career. By the season’s end, Amy uncovers the truth and takes her findings to Chief Medical Officer Michael (Omar Metwally) and the hospital board. Richard is ultimately fired from his position and has his medical license suspended as punishment. The final time he appears in the season 1 finale, he’s gathering his belongings and preparing to leave Westside Hospital for good.
Although Richard wasn't a good character, fans still loved the magnetic presence Wolf brought to the screen playing him. Despite his unethical choices and manipulative tactics, Richard’s complicated motives made him one of the most compelling figures in Doc’s first season. That's why many fans have been hoping for his return in Doc season 2. Well, it looks like their wishes are coming true. Doc showrunner and executive producer Hank Steinberg revealed this good news in a new interview with TV Insider.
According to the news outlet, they've learned from Steinberg that Wolf will return as a guest star to play his Richard character in multiple episodes later in season 2. Additionally, he will direct one episode, which is set to air in early 2026. When it comes to how Richard's return will play out, Steinberg teased that it won’t be a repeat of what happened last season. Fans can expect a different perspective on the character rather than the same conflicts or behavior they saw in season 1. Essentially, Richard will be back in a new, unexpected way.
“It will be a surprising dynamic, a new angle, and an interesting, different ‘way in’ with his return."
The second season is made up of a whopping 22 episodes, so it's unclear what exactly "later this season" means. Richard could appear anywhere from the midseason episodes to the final stretch. However, we're just as excited as fans to see how his return will unfold!
In July 2025, Steinberg and fellow Doc showrunner and executive producer Barbie Kligman spoke with Us Weekly and seemed to hint that Richard’s story wasn't over and that he would likely appear again in the series. However, they didn’t explicitly confirm that he would be returning in season 2.
In August 2025, Steinberg told TV Insider that although Richard wouldn't be appearing at the start of the second season, the show’s creative team had devised a plan to potentially reintroduce him later in the season. Well, it looks like they were able to make it happen since Wolf is officially coming back to reprise his role for Doc season 2! As more details about his return are revealed, we'll be sure to come back and share everything we learned.
New episodes of Doc season 2 air every Tuesday night on Fox at 9/8c.
