NBC is no stranger to its comedy roots, with shows like 30 Rock, Parks and Recreation and The Office having left their mark on television. Now, the network is reportedly in the process of developing a brand-new church choir comedy starring a very well-known actress.
Some people might recognize this actress from her iconic Broadway roles. Others might know her from her hit TV appearances, including a fan-favorite musical series that showcased her incredible singing and comedic talent. We're talking about Tony Award-winning actress Kristin Chenoweth! Yes, this is the same person who brought to life the unforgettable April Rhodes on Glee. She guest-starred on this hit Fox musical comedy-drama for five episodes.

You might also remember Chenoweth's dazzling performances on Broadway in shows like Wicked and You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown. Or perhaps, you watched her in The West Wing as Annabeth Schott, the savvy and charming deputy press secretary, or as Olive Snook in the ABC comedy-drama series Pushing Daisies. Now, Chenoweth is set to lead this untitled church choir comedy from NBC. She has also signed on as an executive producer.
According to Deadline, it will be a multi-camera series. Kapital Entertainment and 3 Arts are the companies producing the show, while Universal Television serves as the studio. Alissa Neubauer (Call Me Kat, Mom) wrote the script, which follows Mary, a woman who is sentenced to complete community service as the director of a local church choir. Reluctantly dragged into this new role, Mary will find herself growing and learning along the way.
Chenoweth stars as Mary. Besides her, other executive producers of the series include Neubauer, Aaron Kaplan, Troy Zien, and Michael Rotenberg. This is all that's been revealed about this NBC show so far. We'll return and provide more information as it becomes available.
Chenoweth most recently starred in the Netflix rom-com Our Little Secret. She was also part of the cast of the short-lived Apple TV+ musical comedy series Schmigadoon!. She played the roles of Mildred Layton and Miss Codwell. We'll see her next returning to Broadway in The Queen of Versailles. She is starring and producing the musical, which is set to start performances on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2025. Chenoweth stars in the production as the character, Jackie Siegel.
Besides this Broadway project, Chenoweth is also confirmed to recur in the upcoming mockumentary-style cheerleading comedy series Stumble. It will air on NBC.
