It’s a season of change for NBC, it seems, with the NBA’s arrival on the network leading to some major shifts in the network’s strategy and some interesting moves for returning shows!
This fall, NBC will become home to in-season primetime coverage of the NBA, resulting in the network turning over one of its already limited primetime blocks to a night of NBA coverage beginning in October. With the NBA coming to primetime, NBC will now have two full nights of sports programming between the NBA on Tuesdays and NFL primetime games on Sunday, courtesy of Sunday Night Football. With the network losing three hours of its programming slate to the NBA, this meant tough cuts for the network, and also means some change is coming to the fall lineup.
The biggest change is coming to NBC’s rollout of the new season of The Voice. As in past years, the season will begin with airing new episodes on both Monday and Tuesday for the first few weeks of the season. However, when the NBA moves into the Tuesday programming block in October, The Voice will not only move to a one-night format, but its Monday night episodes will be shaved from two hours to one, marking a first for the show, which has long aired 2-hour blocks on Monday nights.
This move will help NBC work in a new comedy block on Monday nights as well as bring fans the second season of the recently renewed Brilliant Minds, which will continue to close out Monday nights behind The Voice. Interestingly, NBC has not revealed what two shows will make up its Monday night and Friday night comedy blocks outside of confirming St. Denis Medical will lead the Monday block and Happy's Place will lead the Friday block. The remaining two slots will be filled by new comedies in development, one of which is expected to be The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins, starring Tracy Morgan and Daniel Radcliffe. However, the show could slide to midseason should NBC instead opt to slot in its cheerleading comedy Stumble, or the untitled Sierra Teller Ornelas comedy.
Also on the move is The Hunting Party, which will shift to Thursday nights beginning in the fall, where it will air behind new episodes of Law & Order and Law & Order: SVU.
As for Wednesday nights? It’s of little surprise to know that the One Chicago dramas will remain in place with no changes coming for the trio of dramas as One Chicago Wednesdays will continue for the 2025-26 season!
