There is certainly some change coming in Matlock season 2, but that change shouldn’t worry us. This is still set up to be the same great show that had us all hooked in season 1.

The shocking Matlock season 1 finale saw Olympia learn that Julian was the one to remove the Wellbrexa study to help Senior with his case at the time. She was left with a decision to make. Would she do the right thing by handing the study in and exposing the law firm, or would she protect the father of her children?

The Matlock season 2 premiere synopsis has told us what Olympia will do. She’ll protect Julian, and that’s something for the series to play with in the new season.

Sometimes Olympia will hold the power in Matlock season 2

We’ll get answers right away, as Matlock season 2 is set to pick up straight off the back of season 1. Olympia has to make a decision, and then she needs to decide what to do when it comes to Matty. After all, she and Matty were looking to expose the wrongdoings of the firm.

If Olympia holds onto the study, it makes her complicit. It also makes her a threat to Matty, as she knows who Matty really is. Yet, it’s clear from the promo and the first image of the season that Matty is still around.

So, it looks like Matty will still hold some of the power. Yet, there are times that Olympia gets it, and that certainly adds some excitement.

No, No Monsters

Also, Matty is on a stressful hunt for an important document on the Wellbrexa case, on MATLOCK, Thursday, Dec. 12 (9:01-10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and streaming on Paramount+ (live and on demand for Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers, or on demand for Paramount+ Essential subscribers the day after the episode airs)*. Matty and Olympia will both surprise us

Olympia appears to be someone who is in it for the long haul. She can play the long game when needed, and that means she likely has a plan up her sleeve. She needs to protect Julian, but she will also likely want that study out there. She just needs to find a way to pin it on Senior.

We’ll get to see both Matty and Olympia surprise us throughout Matlock season 2. Showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman hasn’t exactly hinted at how when talking with TVLine, but she does share that we can be assured that the season will be just as good as the first despite some of these power dynamic shifts.

“I will just tease that Matty is not the only person in control this year; the fact that Olympia, at times, has more information than Matty becomes significant.”

To be fair, the addition of One Day at a Time’s Justina Machado is also an exciting thing, as she could end up being “an asset or a liability.” She’s Senior’s least favorite ex-wife, but did she gain the position she’s in because she knows about the Wellbrexa study and will do everything she can to protect her own position and her ex-husband?

Matlock season 2 premieres on Sunday, Oct. 12 at 8:30 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT before moving to Thursdays at 9/8c on CBS.
