Matlock season 2 has finally arrived, and we're finally going to get answers on all of those shocking cliffhangers from the season 1 finale. Not only was Matty brought face-to-face with a mystery man who could be Alfie's father, but after teaming up with Matty, Olympia discovered the truth about Julian's role in the Wellbrexa cover-up. There are a lot of changes to come!
Following the season 1 finale, Matty meets Joey, the presumed father of Alfie who arrived at their doorstep. Matty instructs Edwin to leave the house with Alfie while she talks with him. She grills him on his relationship with Ellie. He gives her Ellie's iPod and reveals a detail that confirms he knows her. Naturally, Matty takes some hair for a DNA test before Joey leaves and Olympia arrives.
She's forthright about the situation with Joey, and Olympia gives her a hug. However, what she doesn't give her is the truth about what she found out about Julian in the finale. She's not giving up her ex-husband and decides to pursue Senior instead, since he did orchestrate Julian hiding the Wellbrexa files. But Olympia's jumping through hoops to keep Julian out of it.
Olympia wants to take Senior down in Matlock season 2 episode 1
Olympia's fired up about the new direction the case has taken and later, Matty and Edwin talk with Alfie about his potential father and give him his mother's iPod. Back at home, Olympia drafts text messages to Matty. She's feeling guilty about lying to her and considers admitting the truth, but she only asks how she's feeling. Despite everything, they still have a friendship.
Sarah and Billy chat about Claudia's shocking pregnancy while Julian's key card doesn't work to get into the office, and Senior gives his case to Olympia, further creating tension on the team. But he's more concerned about the Wellbrexa scandal that Olympia's trying to tamper down. She's only protecting him because of their children, and that's also why she's refusing to destroy the document.
Olympia's case involving two girls who were accused of burning down their school's theater gets immediately complicated when one girl turns on the other. Aside from the challenging case, Olympia and Matty try to get to the bottom of Senior's "Roses or Tulips" mystery woman. Matty pushes Olympia to push the Julian narrative, and it's clear that going to be an impasse between them.
Edwin believes Olympia is manipulating Matty, and he's not wrong, but Matty's also manipulating Olympia. They're manipulating each other. While investigating for the case, Matty sends Billy and Sarah off to stakeout a potential witness. Olympia steals a flower shop business card from Senior's office, and Matty distracts Senior to give Olympia time. She ruffles his feathers big time.
How Matty learned the truth about Olympia
Matty continues to open up to Olympia about the truth at the center of Ellie's addiction problems and Matty's rocky relationship with her daughter. They connect over this situation and Matty agrees to take Senior down. Edwin wants this to end, and she's going against his wishes. Olympia pleads her case in court and seems to push the right narrative to catch the jury's attention.
After work, Matty joins Olympia at home when Matty receives a phone call from Edwin about Joey. He thinks he saw him outside their house and Edwin wants her to come home. She's stuck between a rock and a hard place, but she's honest to Olympia about Edwin thinking she's manipulating her. Billy calls with an update on the dog walker. He didn't see Georgia; he saw Maya.
During a meeting with Maya and her mother, it's revealed that she was catfished and sent nude photos to the catfish. That's why she threw the party, but she didn't start the fire. While the team works on the case, the conversation turns to Billy's situation. He admits that he doesn't want to be a father. Olympia and the team offer their support for whatever decision he makes.
Matty makes a discovery about a ping pong ball that breaks their case wide open. Olympia brings the revelation into court about Georgia bringing 50 ping pong balls into the space for beer pong. The witness admits that the ping pong balls could have ben the source of the fire. After court, Billy shares the news that he and Claudia decided to get back together and have the baby.
Olympia decides to buy Julian out of the brownstone and tells him to fix things with his dad so he can help build her case. Matty opens the DNA test and learns Joey's Alfie's father, but he's not sober. In flashbacks, Matty's scheme to pull one over on Olympia and steal the Wellbrexa files from her safe is revealed. Matty knows that Olympia lied to her and she has her story now.
Matlock returns to its regular time on Thursday, Oct. 16 at 9/8c on CBS, also streaming on Paramount+.
