Yellowstone was easily one of the best Western dramas to hit television, and fans were able to watch five amazing seasons unfold with gripping storylines, unforgettable characters, and stunning Montana backdrops. With it being such a popular series, it went on to expand into a television franchise of prequels, sequels, and spinoffs. One of the most recently announced sequels/spinoffs is Y:Marshals, an upcoming Western drama centered around Kayce Dutton, John and Evelyn Dutton's youngest son in Yellowstone.
We first learned of this series back in March 2025 when it was announced that a potential Yellowstone spinoff was in development for CBS, focusing on the Kayce Dutton character. Luke Grimes was said to be reprising the role from Yellowstone. Then, in May 2025, CBS officially ordered the show to be made, giving it the temporary name of Y:Marshals. Spencer Hudnut serves as showrunner and is also a writer and executive producer of the show. Grimes and Yellowstone franchise creator Taylor Sheridan are also signed on as executive producers. Production will reportedly take place this summer, with the series set for a midseason premiere in 2026. Additionally, it will air on CBS on Sunday nights at 9 p.m.
In this upcoming series, the story will follow Kayce after he sold the Yellowstone Ranch to the Broken Rock Reservation in the Yellowstone series finale. He's traded in his life as a rancher and joined an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, where he uses both his cowboy skills and his experience as a Navy SEAL to enforce justice across Montana’s vast landscapes. The show will also delve into how Kayce and his team juggle the demands of family, duty, and the emotional toll that comes with life on the front lines.
After Y:Marshals' official announcement, Grimes took to social media to confirm his return as Kayce. He shared a screenshot of Deadline's report of the series order on his Instagram page and left a caption saying, "Cowboys dont say goodbye, they say see you later." Of course, this had fans buzzing with excitement, as many were thrilled to find out that Grimes was officially back in the saddle. For many, Kayce Dutton has been a fan-favorite since the beginning, and the announcement only fueled anticipation for what’s next in his journey.
At this time, Grimes is the only confirmed cast member attached to the project. However, with the series officially ordered and production expected to begin soon, additional casting announcements are likely just around the corner. Don't worry.
