Well, well, well. Just when we thought the dust had settled in the Law & Order universe, another cast shakeup has hit the precinct. As the iconic police procedural gears up for its twenty-fifth season, a familiar face is walking away. This cast departure marks yet another shift in the ever-evolving ensemble, reminding fans that no character is ever truly safe in the world of network television.
Sadly, Mehcad Brooks is the latest star to say goodbye, officially exiting the series after three seasons as Detective Jalen Shaw. He will not be reprising the role in the upcoming Law & Order season 25. In 2022, Brooks was announced as a new cast member for the hit NBC drama starting in its twenty-second season. He was revealed to be stepping in to fill the vacancy left by Anthony Anderson, who decided not to continue after reprising his role as Detective Kevin Bernard in season 21. Brooks went on to reprise his role as Detective Jalen Shaw in seasons 23 and 24 as well.

According to Deadline, Brooks' exit from Law & Order was a mutual decision between the actor and the show’s producers, with Brooks already exploring new opportunities beyond the Law & Order universe. Producers and casting directors are now looking for someone new to join the cast as a detective.
Most of the other key cast members like Tony Goldwyn, Reid Scott, Hugh Dancy, Odelya Halevi, and Maura Tierney are reportedly set to return for the upcoming installment. However, sources indicate that many actors across the Law & Order and Chicago franchises will be appearing in fewer episodes in their next seasons as part of a broader cost-saving strategy by NBC.
Besides Law & Order, Brooks is best known for starring in TV shows such as Boston Public, Desperate Housewives, The Game, True Blood, Necessary Roughness and Supergirl. You might also recognize him from his previous roles in Just Wright, About Last Night, Nobody's Fool, A Fall from Grace and Mortal Kombat. His most recent project was taking on the role of Marion Odin in And Just Like That... season 3. We'll see him next in the sequel Mortal Kombat 2, which is scheduled for a theatrical release on Oct. 24, 2025.
Given Brooks' talent and versatility, we’re sure he'll continue to land more roles in both television and film. Who knows? Maybe he'll return to the Law & Order universe someday. After all, anything is possible in long-running franchises like this.
Law & Order season 25 is set to premiere on NBC sometime this fall. Stay tuned to GeekSided, as we'll be sharing the official premiere date once it is announced.
