We’re certainly ready for the return of Kate Walsh on Grey’s Anatomy. As previously shared, it’s happening late this month. In fact, it’s happening extremely soon, but this exciting news comes with a downside.
Walsh will step back into the shoes of Dr. Addison Montgomery on Grey’s Anatomy season 22 episode 10. That is just a couple of weeks away, airing on Thursday, Jan. 29, which is sure to excite many. It also comes with the return of Caterina Scorsone, who will return as Amelia Shepherd after an eight-episode break. So, what’s the bad news?
Kate Walsh is only back for one episode of Grey’s Anatomy
Despite initially coming in as a bit of an antagonist, Addison gained a number of followers and fans. It helped that she was a great and caring doctor, focused on helping mothers and babies when they needed the most support. Giving her Private Practice was the best thing ever, further allowing for her development, and we’ve loved every minute we get with her back at Grey Sloan Memorial.
So, it’s normal to want more than one episode with her back in the halls. That’s not happening in Grey’s Anatomy season 22, though. Matt Webb Mitovich has confirmed that Walsh will only be back for the one episode.
At least, that’s at this time. Look, Grey’s Anatomy season 22 is still filming, so maybe there’s a chance that she could be needed again. That’s not usually what happens, though, and we’ll probably have to wait until season 23 (should it happen).

What to expect when Grey’s Anatomy season 22 episode 10 airs
As of right now, we don’t have a lot of details about the episode with Walsh. What we do know is that it should coincide with the return of Caterina Scorsone, as well. Scorsone had to take an extended leave due to budget cuts on the series, and it was written in as Amelia Shepherd took a sabbatical after never really taking a vacation from work to help deal with the loss of her friend, Monica Beltran.
It’s possible that Amelia turned to Addison for some help during that time. The two have always been the best of friends, with Addison helping Amelia through some major life crises, including the death of her son, Christopher.
Amelia is sure to need more support when she returns, as she learns of everything that has happened at the hospital. Jo faced a near-death experience while giving birth, and Webber is undergoing surgery for prostate cancer. Returning with Addison is going to be the best thing for her.
If it doesn't coincide with the return, it's going to be just before it. Hopefully, there's at least an Amelia update to remind us of this close-knit friendship.
Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 10/9c on ABC and streams the following day on Hulu.
