As one of the biggest breakthrough new shows of the past television season, we're all eagerly awaiting the High Potential season 2 premiere on ABC. The critically acclaimed fan-favorite series returns on Sept. 16 and continues after a jaw-dropping season finale that revealed Roman's alive (and his location is known by Karadec!) and Morgan had a run-in with the game maker.
The stakes are higher than ever when Morgan and the team get back in action in season 2, but there are still plenty of surprises and new cases in store. We'll surely be getting some answers about Roman and the game maker, but neither of those storylines will be as cut and dry as we expect. Morgan will still be hitting a few roadblocks on her path to justice and resolution.
Ahead of the season 2 premiere, High Potential showrunner Todd Harthan shared a few teases about what's to come in the new episodes in TV Line's Fall TV preview. Beyond sharing some teases about David Giuntoli and Steve Howey's characters, the show's boss also revealed there's a big surprise cameo coming up in the midseason finale that will "surprise" viewers.

High Potential season 2 plans 'lovely surprise' guest star for midseason finale
According to Harthan, High Potential season 2's fall break will be preceded by a guest star appearance that he "can’t talk about because it’s a lovely surprise in our midseason finale." While Harthan didn't divulge any additional details about this guest star and their character, he revealed that the guest star is male and he will "disrupt" things for Morgan. What does that mean?
Harthan further elaborated about the midseason surprise, "There’s going to be a little bit of an ‘Oh, what’s happening here?’ situation with him and Morgan that’s going to disrupt things. We’ve got some surprises." Well, that time it's surprises, plural. There's more up his sleeve!
Obviously, this new mystery guest star will be someone entirely new, not Giuntoli or Howey. Could the midseason guest star be Roman's debut appearance in the show? Harthan also addressed the theory that new recurring guest star Mekhi Phifer could be playing Roman. He didn't shut that down, only stating that "it is 100% a possibility." Come on, throw us a bone here!

Phifer's character will become involved in major crimes, which is a very vague description, but could allude to either Roman or a completely new character the team meets during a case. The midseason finale could host Phifer's first appearance in the show, but we'll have to wait and see once season 2 premieres. There are also more options for the surprise midseason guest star.
Harthan's "Oh, what's happening here?" and "disruption" teases could mean this character conflicts with her personally. Could this be a parental figure, perhaps Morgan's father? Could Tom (JD Pardo) return to shake things up? Could Kaitlin Olson's real-life husband Rob McElhenney drop by for an episode? The possibilities are endless, and we'll be waiting with bated breath until November rolls around.
As for Giuntoli and Howey's characters, the show's boss wouldn't confirm who Giuntoli's character actually is, referring to the "bonkers" theories fans have been entertaining since the season finale. Meanwhile, Howey joins the main cast as the precinct's new captain Nick Wagner, and there could be some sparks flying between him and Morgan. Maybe that's one of season 2's surprises!
High Potential season 2 premieres Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 10/9c on ABC.
