Sitcoms aren't as popular these days, and it doesn't help that many don't get to stick around long enough to find their voice or build a loyal audience. Fortunately, this hasn't been the case for CBS's Ghosts, which recently wrapped its fourth season in May. The hilariously funny comedy sitcom has already been confirmed for a fifth and sixth season, with the fifth installment expected to start airing sometime at the end of 2025.
Now that Ghosts has solidified its place as one of CBS’s most beloved comedies, its stars are having a little fun dreaming up new ways to keep things fresh, including one idea that no one saw coming. One of the show's cast members is now pitching a surprising crossover with another hit CBS show, sparking buzz about what a shared universe might look like between two wildly different worlds.
Utkarsh Ambudkar, who stars in one of the leading roles as Jayanth "Jay" Arondeka in the comedy sitcom, recently spoke with Decider's Hope Sloop, who asked him about his thoughts on a potential crossover between Ghosts and the police procedural Elsbeth. Sloop mentioned to Ambudkar how she had previously spoken to Elsbeth showrunner Jonathan Tolins about a crossover idea and he seemed down for it.
Ambudkar then responded with enthusiasm and a bit of humor, saying that he had just spoken to Tolins the previous night about the very idea of a crossover between their two shows. Although his and Tolins' conversation started off playful, Ambudkar made it clear to Sloop that he genuinely believes there's something there. That a crossover could actually work.
"I literally was talking to him last night about this. Last night, I was like, ‘Hey man, the crossover’s coming. You know what I mean? They gotta put us together, baby.’ And he was like ‘I guess you’re right.’ And I was like, ‘It’s a match made in heaven. If it’s not us, it’s gonna be NCIS. Pick your poison, baby."
However, he acknowledged that turning the idea into reality would come with a few challenges, namely, the fact that Ghosts films in Canada while Elsbeth shoots in a different country. Still, Ambudkar remained optimistic about the possibilities. He joked that if the Elsbeth team was willing to travel to Montreal, where Ghosts films, they could find a way to make it work.
"So we were joking, but I think the worlds could really fit. And they do such a great job of casting, as well, their guest stars. And I think it’d be awesome. We shoot in different countries, but if there’s a way to make it work, if they’ll come up to Montreal. We got great food, baby!"
When thinking about both shows, it doesn't seem like their worlds would mesh well at first glance with Ghosts being a quirky supernatural comedy and Elsbeth being a police procedural. However, Elsbeth isn't always serious. In fact, it's a comedy drama, so I could see how the mix of humor and drama in both shows could create a surprisingly natural fit, making a crossover not only possible but also potentially very entertaining. I would love to see Carrie Preston's Elsbeth arriving at Woodstone Manor to solve a supernatural mystery. That would be a sight to see!
One can only hope that the powers that be at CBS take note of the playful interest from both casts and creatives. If that day ever comes and we get a crossover episode, it'll surely be a treat for fans of both shows.
