The Thanksgiving episode of Ghosts season 5 is set to pay homage to a very special holiday-themed movie. At the same time, the spirits at Woodstone Manor have decided they need to “replace” Sam.

There are a few guest stars that the Ghosts showrunners have said that they would like to see back. Well, the Thanksgiving-themed episode, which will air on Thursday, Nov. 20, is set to bring one of those characters back, but how much trouble will this person end up creating?

Look who’s back in Ghosts season 5

Titled “Planes, Shanes, and Automobiles,” Ghosts season 5 episode 6 will see Sam on the road, and that means the spirits of the Manor will need someone in the house to communicate with. After all, there’s only so much they can do to get Jay’s attention when they need his help. So, they decide to call in someone else who can see them.

It’s time to get Kyle back. As you’ll remember, we met Kyle in Ghosts season 4, when Pete was shocked on his travels to learn that Kyle could see him. He couldn’t help but bring Kyle back to the house, which is where Sam and Kyle immediately clicked, much to Jay’s annoyance and jealousy.

Well, things didn’t quite work out, as a sordid truth of Kyle’s past came out. However, don’t people deserve a second chance? It looks like the spirits believe so, because while Sam is out of town, they’re going to arrange for Kyle to come back and communicate with them. That’s sure to go down well with Jay!

It's not surprising that the spirits need a babysitter, though. They've become used to having someone in the land of the living to talk to and keep on top of their demands. Jay can't do much when he can't communicate with them, and it raises the question of whether it's time for Jay to be able to see the spirits permanently.

"Unsatisfied with Jay’s ability to tend to their needs while Sam is away, the ghosts bring in a better babysitter, Kyle. Meanwhile, Sam and Pete get on each other’s nerves during a book tour road trip, and things reach a breaking point when an airline strike threatens their ability to get home in time for Thanksgiving."

A tribute to Planes, Trains, and Automobiles

With the title of Ghosts season 5 episode 6, it won’t be too surprising to find out that this episode is a tribute to Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. While Sam is out on a book tour — and Pete is joining her to see a bit more of the world — their travel plans are disrupted. Now they need to find a way to get back to Woodstone Manor before Thanksgiving, so Sam can spend it with Jay.

There’s something bigger at play with the travel fiasco, though. Remember that Pete has to get back to base before he disappears. While he will be able to eventually spend longer away from Woodstone Manor — as Joan tells us — he’s not built up that resistance yet. This is sure to put that to the test, and we could end up with a very worried Pete and Sam throughout the journey.

Ghosts season 5 airs on Thursdays at 8:30/7:30c on CBS.
