When it comes to the long-term members of Firehouse 51, they’ve not had it easy from season to season. Each one has been through a personal crisis or two, and Chicago Fire season 14 is about to see a big one for one character in particular.
The talks of layoffs are rampant this season, as budget cuts mean firehouse closures. However, when it comes to Herrmann’s storyline, there is something majorly personal that goings to affect him, and it’s been described as his most “challenging” crisis to date.

Herrmann has already been through so much in Chicago Fire
This is a man who tries not to let life get him down, and in recent years, he’s certainly faced a few personal crises. One of those was losing his hearing, which allowed David Eigenberg to use his real hearing aids in the show.
Herrmann has also had to deal with the fear of losing his wife, Cindy. She was diagnosed with lung cancer, something that shocked them both considering Herrmann’s job. Fortunately, she pulled through, but we did worry that the Chicago Fire writers were going to break us with Cindy’s loss.
Well, Herrmann is about to go through another personal crisis, and according to showrunner Andrea Newman to TVLine, Herrmann will face “one of his most challenging personal crises he’s ever dealt with.”

Mouch and Herrmann’s friendship is put to the test in Chicago Fire season 14
Something that stands out is how Mouch and Herrmann’s friendship is going to be put to the test. Newman went on to say that how Mouch helps or can’t help with the situation is going to come up as Herrmann deals with whatever the crisis is.
The initial question was about how the change in leadership would affect their friendship, as Herrmann stepped down as captain after realizing he didn’t want to be chief. However, he wanted Mouch to get that lieutenant spot at Firehouse 51, and that meant demoting himself all the way to the bottom.
Now he needs to deal with that, and what it means for him and Mouch when they’re on calls. Mixed with the personal crisis, it looks like Herrmann has a lot to deal with, and it means struggling with his friendship with his oldest friend at the firehouse.
Herrmann is the one who will struggle the most, and we know that Herrmann has a habit of taking a few things to heart. Can he separate personal and work when he needs to? How long will it take for potential broken fences to mend?
Chicago Fire season 14 premieres on Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 9/8c on NBC.
