CBS might be leaving the door open for most members of the Blue Bloods cast to guest star in the forthcoming spinoff, Boston Blue, but there is one original member of the cast who will certainly not be part of the new series.
In an unexpected move, CBS has recast the role of Sean Reagan for Boston Blue, with actor Mika Amonsen joining the spinoff as a series regular. Amonsen takes over the role from Andrew Terraciano, who played Danny’s youngest son across all 14 seasons of Blue Bloods, going all the way back to the show’s pilot episode. According to TVLine, the recasting is connected to the desire to take the character in a new creative direction.
Needless to say, fans are understandably disappointed in the decision to recast the character rather than bring Terraciano back to reprise the role.
“I’ll miss Sean. He deserved a chance on Danny’s show,” commented one disappointed fan. “I hope it was because Terraciano wasn’t interested, otherwise that’s kinda crappy,” commented another disappointed fan.
Honestly, the disappointment among fans is justified. Terraciano was a beloved member of the Blue Bloods cast and stuck around throughout the entire run, so it’s disappointing that the Boston Blue team chose to recast his character rather than bring him back. This recast effectively rules out the possibility of Terraciano even getting the chance to guest star on the spinoff, and we also have to wonder if it means we won’t see Terraciano’s real-life brother Tony, who played Danny’s eldest son Jack, on the spinoff as well.
The recast news does at least shine a light on why exactly Donnie Wahlberg’s Detective Danny Reagan has chosen to leave New York City behind to move to Boston.
As revealed with the casting alert, Boston Blue will see Sean moving to Boston to start a new chapter as part of the Boston PD where he’s working as a patrolman. The decision to leave NYC behind stemmed from Sean looking to continue his family’s legacy of working in law enforcement, but doing so with the desire to work in a department in a city outside of his hometown. It seems that Danny’s decision to take a position with the Boston PD is a result of his desire to be close to his son, with the show set to explore the father-son relationship in a new way.
What is interesting is that when we last saw Sean in the series finale, he had revealed he was going to head off to college. Either way, it seems likely a time jump will be coming one way or another if Sean is already working as a patrolman with the Boston PD.
While Blue Bloods fans are sure to appreciate that Boston Blue will continue to have a Reagan family element to its storytelling, the action will expand to focus on a new prominent law enforcement family. Boston Blue will introduce fans to the Silver family which will include Danny’s new partner Detective Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green), Maggie Lawson as Sarah Silver, Marcus Scribner as Jonah Silver, Gloria Reuben as Mae Silver, and Ernie Hudson as Reverend Peters.
Boston Blue will premiere this fall on CBS, taking over the 10 p.m. time slot on Friday which Blue Bloods held through its final season.
