If you're excited about Scrubs coming back since the medical drama wrapped up its story in 2010 after nine seasons, then you'll be happy to know that the reboot is gaining some serious momentum at ABC! News of the follow-up came in December 2024, and things have been moving along a little slowly since then. Though now, there's a major update.

While overall television pilot season for the big networks happens between January through April each year, recently ABC has been trying its hand at its own, second pilot cycle which is happening right now, per Deadline. One of the main shows it's looking at for a possible 2025-2026 premiere is the Scrubs reboot.

So during this time, creators pitch the ideas they have for new series' and the network then decides whether to give them a pilot order. That's where one, and the first, episode is produced. From there, companies then decide whether to give a show a season order and pick it up to bring to audiences. So right now, the Scrubs reboot is "moving toward a pilot order," according to Deadline.

The news outlet shares that creator Bill Lawrence is attached to the project in the role, as well as taking on executive producing duties. Though he has a deal with Warner Bros TV, which is something he's had to figure out how to work around so he can share his responsibilities with the medical drama. Thankfully, lead actor Zach Braff, aka John "J.D." Dorian, is coming back as well!

This is a very positive indicator, and I'm sure will help what Lawrence calls, Scrubs 2.0, to hit the ground running. Deadline also reports that other "key original cast members" have been in negotiations to come back on board, and those talks are getting close to being done. After months, this again hopefully indicates that ABC will finally give them the go ahead to create and film a pilot episode.

If the production does get picked up, Lawrence's idea for it is to be a "hybrid" between a revival and reboot. So we'd get caught up with the OG characters and what they've been doing for the last 15 years, as well as focus on the teaching aspect of it with a new set of surgical interns.

Alongside Braff, Scrubs starred Donald Faison (Turk), Sarah Chalke (Elliott), Judy Reyes (Carla), John C. McGinley (Dr. Cox), Neil Flynn (The Janitor), Ken Jenkins (Kelso), Christa Miller (Jordan), Robert Maschio (The Todd), and the late Sam Lloyd (Ted). At the time, the show's ninth and final season introduced newcomers Kerry Bishé (Lucy), Michael Mosley (Drew), Dave Franco (Cole), and Eliza Coupe (Denise).

As mentioned above, other than Braff, none of the other actors have been confirmed yet. Though it's very likely many of them will be back to reprise their roles. Even if it's as guest stars or cameos. TVLine reports that Faison and Chalke are in talks to come back as series regulars.

Scrubs took over our lives in the 2000s in the best way possible when the series was first introduced to us in 2001 on NBC. For seven seasons, it ran on the network before ABC came in and saved it from cancellation. Seasons 8 and 9 aired on ABC, with the final season subtitled Med School. It saw some major changes, including OG cast exits, becoming a mix of old and new characters. Plus, the narration switched from JD to Lucy Bennett. Where does the story go from here? Hopefully we'll find out if the show gets picked up. Fingers crossed!
