With summer approaching, the 2024-25 TV season is coming to a close as our favorite broadcast shows wrap up their seasons ahead of the break. For some of these shows, it’s simply the end of their current season. For a large group of other shows, though, it’s the end of the line with ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC choosing to bring several beloved shows to an abrupt end.
Thus far, 14 shows have been canceled by the broadcast Big 4, and interestingly, 50% of those cancellations have come in the month of May. The Equalizer, Found, The Irrational, Lopez vs. Lopez, Night Court, Rescue HI-Surf, and Suits LA were all axed within the first two weeks of May alone, and with six other shows sitting on the bubble, there is a really good chance that the number of shows canceled in May could keep rising as the weeks go on.
As of May 16, ABC’s Doctor Odyssey, NBC’s Grosse Pointe Garden Society, and FOX’s Accused, Alert, The Cleaning Lady, and The Great North are all waiting to learn their fates. That’s six additional shows waiting to learn whether they’ll return or come to a close, like many of the other hit shows that have been surprisingly canceled in May.
Looking at the list, we honestly fear that the majority of these shows could be in danger. While we’re optimistic, it just seems likely that most of these shows might not get the chance to continue.
ABC took a similar drawn-out approach with The Rookie: Feds not too long ago, making it seem like the show had a hope of returning, only to cancel it in the end, months removed from its finale. We fear this could happen with Doctor Odyssey, with ABC making it seem like there is hope, only for the show to be canceled in the end.
We’re feeling optimistic about Grosse Pointe Garden Society with the hope being it might move to Peacock, and we’re also optimistic that FOX might hand out at least one or two renewals to its four bubble shows.
Of FOX’s bubble dramas, a renewal is looking least likely for The Great North. The fact that FOX renewed all other animated comedies, including some for multiple seasons, but has left The Great North out in the cold, hints that it’s likely going to come to an end. It also seems unlikely that Accused is going to be renewed, given the network’s comments about the show not likely coming back anytime soon. This leaves us with The Cleaning Lady and Alert. These two shows seem like the most likely candidates for renewal, but there is a good chance only one will be brought back, with The Cleaning Lady seeming like the favorite of the two to return.
We’ll see where the networks land with the bubble shows and where our final cancellation count ends up falling when all is said and done. For now, what we do know is that May has been a rough month for TV fans and could very well get rougher before it comes to an official end.
