The future for Will and Angie shippers isn't looking great. Will Trent and Angie Polaski, played by Ramón Rodríguez and Erika Christensen, are two of the main stars on the ABC police procedural drama series Will Trent, which recently wrapped its third season.
Throughout the show, Will and Angie have been in an on-again off-again relationship that seemingly ended for good in season 3, with both characters moving on in new relationships. Will began dating Gina Rodriguez's character Marion Alba, while Angie got involved with Scott Foley's Dr. Seth. By the end of the season, we learn that Angie is pregnant with Seth's baby and intends to keep it.
Rodríguez recently chatted with Deadline about the show, and when asked about his and Angie's new relationships, he indicated that season 3 created "real finality" between Will and Angie, suggesting that the pair really are done in a romantic sense and unlikely to get back together in the future.
He adds that it "will be a fun conversation" moving into the fourth season and figuring out where the pair stand now. Season 3 provided some really beautiful and emotional moments between the two, with Will still showing up for Angie whenever she needs him, even when it's really hard.
"I love that we ended it showing that Will shows up for Angie, even when it crushes and absolutely devastates him. He wants to be there for her even though it was a really tough moment. Everyone on set was emotional. It was a very tense and tough thing because he sees the thing that Will has always wanted be so close, but out of his reach," Rodríguez said.
Angie and Will's dynamic has always been complicated, though the show plays it a lot differently than the books. In the Will Trent book series by Karin Slaughter, Angie is a far more divisive character and can sometimes be incredibly manipulative and even cruel to Will. Her show counterpart is much nicer.
Earlier this year, Christensen spoke about Will and Angie's relationship with TVInsider and added that as just two characters on a television show, she is rooting for them to be together.
"They so obviously love each other, and they have something that that isn’t necessarily better, but it’s different. It’s something that no one else could ever actually have, right?"
Angie and Will are trauma bonded and whether or not they work out romantically, it does feel like they will always have a place for one another in their lives. But this show is still relatively young, as it's only in its third season. Even if it doesn't look like they're going to end up together at the moment, things could change in the future.
Fans will be waiting a while to see what's next for either character as Will Trent won't return for its fourth season until 2026. ABC has chosen to hold Will Trent and The Rookie for midseason debuts, similar to what they did this past year, so they can air for (mostly) uninterrupted 18-episode runs.
