The fourth season of hit ABC comedy Abbott Elementary finally saw the couple we've been rooting for this whole time, Gregory and Janine, get together, together. These two danced around each other in such a slow burn, will they won't they situation for three seasons before finally giving in. Yay! Season 4 saw a lot of cute moments between the couple, and there's more to come in Abbott Elementary season 5 as well.
At the 2025 Disney Upfronts, Gregory actor Tyler James Williams spoke with The Hollywood Reporter and was asked about what we can expect to see between the two teachers, and their relationship, in the new season. Here's what he had to say:
"We have to explore the next steps of their relationship, for sure. I think now that they're officially together, there's things that they have to accomplish and get done together. Like I think we saw in the [season 4] finale of Janine meeting Gregory's father. They need to meet the families, they need to decide what life looks like for the two of them. We have a lot to explore there."
Williams is right, there's definitely a lot still to explore! We've already seen Janine and Gregory together celebrating their first holidays like matching costumes for Halloween and spending Christmas Eve with patching pajamas, and even some jealousy during the Abbott Elementary and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia crossover episode when Dee flirted with Gregory. There's also overcoming Gregory's germaphobic tendencies, those sweet I love you's, and even as Williams mentioned above, Janine meeting Gregory's dad. She survived it, and helped him remember the playful and more laid back side Gregory's mother used to bring out in him. It was so sweet.
What we might see for Janine and Gregory in Abbott Elementary season 5
So what's next? They've hit a lot of milestones, but there's still a lot for them to experience together. Could wedding bells be in there future? I mean, I feel like Gregory and Janine are definitely endgame. Though a wedding may be too quick to get to in season 5. The writers do love to give them big milestone moments in season finales though, so it could be a proposal coming at the end of the fifth season. But, there's other things to explore first!
Many of us would love Taraji P. Henson and Ayo Edibiri to reprise their roles as Janine's mother and sister, respectively. It would be really cool to see Gregory meet her side of the family next. The two actresses are booked and busy, but hopefully they can make some time to visit the school once more.
There's also the potential of the couple moving in together. We've actually never seen where Gregory lives. In an interview with Deadline, Janine actress and creator of Abbott Quinta Brunson shared they wanted to get to that in season 4 but didn't have time. Though she's looking forward to showing his home in the new season:
"I’m really excited to see Gregory’s apartment. It was something we wanted to do this season that we never got to do, and I’m excited to see it next year."
The season 5 finale of the comedy series could also end with perhaps the couple discussing living together. Would they move into Janine or Gregory's apartment? Or would they try to find a new place of their own? I think that would be a fun storyline to explore because with Gregory's fear of germs, rigid schedule, and bland food tastes, it would make for some hilarious antics as the two get used to living together.
There's also the possibility that Abbott Elementary season 5 may explore Gregory trying to find a principal job at another school. It feels like the comedy was setting that up in season 4. The combination of him taking on the gig with Ava away, needing a second job, then seeing how much the principal salary is. He may be ready for a career change.
And honestly, he really deserves it. Gregory made a great principal and it's been his dream since we first met him. This could change up the dynamics and put a slight obstacle for the couple, who are used to seeing each other at school everyday. There's so many possibilities, I'm so excited to see what's in store!
