Back in May 2025, Sony Pictures Television announced that it was developing a new SWAT spinoff series titled SWAT Exiles, aimed at expanding the universe of the long-running police drama. The announcement came shortly after the original SWAT series concluded its final season on CBS, which didn't quite sit well with fans.
Although the announcement of a spinoff was welcomed by some people, the timing felt off, coming just a couple of months after CBS canceled the original series. Adding to the mixed reactions was the fact that only one cast member had been confirmed to return so far. Shemar Moore, who played Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson in SWAT, was the only confirmed returning star at the time.
Besides him, all that was known regarding the spinoff's cast and crew was that the original 200-person production team that worked on SWAT would remain on board and that Jason Ning (Lucifer) had signed on as showrunner. The executive producers of the new project were revealed to be Moore, Neal H. Moritz, Pavun Shetty, and James Scura.
Since no other original SWAT cast members had been confirmed, speculation quickly began circulating about who, if anyone, might join Moore in SWAT Exiles. Now, we know that the team behind the spinoff is still actively exploring those possibilities. Keith LeGoy, chairman of Sony Pictures Television and producer of the show, attended the Banff World Media Festival and stated that there is a possibility that more actors from the original SWAT cast could appear in the spinoff series.
He explained how important it is to preserve the sense of family that the franchise has built over the years, emphasizing that they want to involve other original cast members in some capacity in the spinoff, but that the exact approach is still being worked out.
"There is a S.W.A.T family and that family is important. We would love to have other family members involved in some way, whether it’s all of them all of the time, some of them some of the time, or something in between. That’s something that we are still figuring out."
The SWAT cast was made up of so many incredible actors who gave their absolute all while the series was on air. We would love to see SWAT cast members such as Jay Harrington reprising his role as Sergeant David "Deacon" Kay or possibly even David Lim returning as Officer Victor Tan. These two actors have publicly spoken out about SWAT's cancellation, discussing how it affected them and how much the show meant to them.
If they haven't already signed on to new projects, I'm sure they'd be down to return and continue their characters’ stories, especially if it means reuniting with the cast and crew that became like family over the years.
SWAT Exiles will consist of 10 episodes. The spinoff does not currently have a network or streaming home, but that's something being worked out at the moment. The story will center around Moore's Hondo character as he comes out of forced retirement to head a new SWAT unit composed of young, untested recruits.
