Fall 2025 is upon us, which means it's time to start gearing up for all the new and returning shows set to start airing on CBS. One of those new series is Sheriff Country, aka the highly anticipated Fire Country spinoff, which puts fan-favorite character Mickey Fox (Morena Baccarin) front and center as she takes on crime in the small town of Edgewater.

While excitement for the show has been building ever since her introduction in Fire Country season 2, CBS just dropped an even bigger reason to celebrate. We now know how many episodes Sheriff Country will have in its first season, and it's way more than what we were expecting. The network ordered a full 20-episode installment, signaling major confidence in the spinoff’s success.

This great news was revealed during Baccarin’s appearance on the July 22 episode of Michael Rosenbaum’s Inside of You podcast, where the Sheriff Country star opened up about the show's episode order and where it films. During the conversation, Baccarin shared how she was approached with the role of Sheriff Mickey Fox. Mickey was introduced in the sixth episode of Fire Country season 2 and was later considered for the spinoff.

When the producers brought the idea of a spinoff to her, Baccarin told them that she was willing to take the role. However, she could not film the show in Vancouver because she lives in New York City with her three children, and being so far away would make it too difficult for her family to manage. In other words, shooting in Vancouver wasn’t feasible for her personal life, so it just wouldn’t work out unless they found a filming location closer to home.

If you weren't aware, Fire Country is shot in Vancouver, so it made sense that its spinoff would follow suit. However, it seems that CBS and the producers really wanted Baccarin to be part of the new show, as they decided to accommodate her and agreed to shoot in Toronto, which is much closer to New York City. In fact, it's about a 1-hour flight, which would allow her to go home on weekends.

“I said to them, ‘This is a no-brainer for me, but I cannot shoot in Vancouver.' There’s, like, no way that my family survives, with three kids in New York City. [There’s no way] that this could work.” - via TVLine

When it comes to her thoughts on the spinoff, Baccarin is enthusiastic about the role and the team behind the show, even though she admits 20-episode network TV seasons are notoriously tough to shoot.

"I haven’t done network TV in a while [since Gotham, where she and McKenzie first met] because… the 20-episode thing is really tough on everybody. But I’m cautiously optimistic. I’m really excited about the series. It’s a great premise. It’s a great character. I really, truly love the people that I’m working with who are creating the show. Brockheimer TV has been incredible in the process, and it’s been smooth sailing.” - via TVLine

Sheriff Country is slated to premiere on CBS on Friday, Oct. 17, 2025, at 9:00 p.m. ET/8:00 p.m. CT. Besides Baccarin, the cast also includes W. Earl Brown, Matt Lauria, Christopher Gorham, and Michele Weaver.
