Just when Matty and Olympia thought they were in the clear and could move forward with their intention to take down Senior, Matlock season 2 continues to throw them curveballs. When one door closes, another opens and so on and so forth.
In last week's episode, Matty tried to get information out of Debra Palmer (guest star Melanie Lynskey), but she had no luck. She and Olympia's bad luck continued when Olympia delivers the unfortunate news that Julian's asking questions. He found out some inconsistencies about Mrs. B's firing, including Matty's Wellbrexa printout. The ice surrounding them is getting thinner!
If there's one thing we know about Matty and Olympia, it's that they have been able to sneak their way out of some tricky situations. Of course, this one might be a bit more difficult to explain, but there's no doubt that they will come up with a way to get Julian off their scent. What's their next move? Julian suspects Matty in the Wellbrexa leak
The episode opens the morning after Olympia dropping by Matty's, having spent the night. Julian's calls her first thing and Olympia immediately gets to work shutting down Matty's involvement with Mrs. Belvin. Julian's certain that Matty has something to do with the situation. She leaves him on the hook long enough to continue their conversation at the office. Hilariously, Edwin gets back at Olympia for leaving him on the side of the road.
Olympia cooks up a plan with Julian to sneak into Matty's phone under the guise that Olympia's also suspicious of her, too. Julian works with the team on their latest case, which Olympia convinces him is "rebuilding his resume." Senior confronts Julian and acts dumb about the Wellbrexa study. It's chilling how he can turn off his emotions. Sarah's horrified when she shares an elevator with Senior, her mother Joanne, and her boyfriend Gary.
To Sarah's horror, Gary asks for her permission to ask her mother to marry him. She tells him she'll think about it since she's focusing on her team's hearing. Matty gets a phone call from her tech guy Carl, and Julian follows her out. Of course, he overhears her end the call and he asks about Carl. Matty plays it off well by throwing questions back at Julian. She answers his questions: Carl is Alfie's tutor who's uploading his assignments remotely.
When Olympia joins them, Julian pushes on about seeing Matty leaving Mrs. B's office. She admits to going into Mrs. B's office to retrieve a photo of her dog. Matty offers over her phone to Julian to prove that she's telling the truth. Carl put exactly what they needed on Matty's phone. Seemingly, Julian fell into Matty and Olympia's trap to get him off their tail about colluding with Belvin. But in relation to the case, he has his own guy who he calls to confirm text chains. They were so close!
Will Olympia switch sides from Matty to Julian?
Julian admits to Olympia that he believes Matty could have faked those text messages and concocts a whole plan to turn Belvin's computer back on to verify their truth. Olympia tries to talk him down, but he's not giving up. He knows that they're gaslighting him without really knowing that they're gaslighting him. But Matty and Olympia aren't out of moves yet. While trying to brainstorm a new plan, Olympia expresses that she feels bad about lying to Julian. She also admits she doesn't trust Matty.
After what Olympia said to her about being a liar, Matty takes that to heart. She insists that's not who she is despite the "mitigating factors." Even though they had that moment, Olympia still sends Julian to the strip club (for the case!) with Matty. But it's still unclear which one of them she's trying to help. While at the strip club, Julian and Matty's phones are confiscated for privacy purposes. Matty fails to get inside Julian's phone for the video of Isaac's password but finds out his PIN.
Olympia steals Julian's phone while he turns away to do something else and deletes the video of Isaac's password. Meanwhile, Matty's off to Mrs. Belvin's laptop for Carl to match the text messages. Apparently, Olympia's still working with Matty, but her true allegiance is still confusing. After the fact, Julian checks Mrs. B's laptop and finds that the texts match. Their plan worked, and they're in the clear. Hopefully, Julian will stop pursuing Matty as a suspect now.
After the case comes to a close, Julian comes to Olympia again. He noticed that when he was on Mrs. B's computer, it was hot. He thinks that Matty could have used it before him to cover her tracks. He uses Olympia's partner code to look at security camera footage to catch Matty. However, they don't see Matty walk in on the footage. They see Julian. Matty warned Carl about the camera and had him take her out of the footage. He doubts himself and Olympia feels bad.
Sarah talks with her mother after her engagement to Gary and admits that she began dating him while she was still married to her father. Olympia and Matty have another conversation. They clear the air and plan to end their quest to take down Senior quickly so she can stop hurting Julian. Matty confesses the truth about her relationship with her parents. She tells Olympia that lying to her was hard and wants to remain friends. Olympia isn't sure she wants that. A heartbreaking ending.
