It's been over a decade since NBC aired the final episode of The Office, and fans still can't get over the impact the show had on comedy and how deeply attached they remain to its unforgettable characters. Many are still hoping for a revival, but it doesn't look like that will happen anytime soon, at least not in the traditional sense. Instead, buzz is building around a new spinoff in the works at Peacock, and now John Krasinski’s recent comments about the show have sparked fresh excitement.
The spinoff is titled The Paper, and it comes from the same creator of the original series, Greg Daniels. Daniels co-created the show with Michael Koman (Nathan for You). It's set in the same universe as The Office, but changes its setting. Instead of taking place at Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch, The Paper shifts the spotlight to a struggling historic newspaper in the Midwest, where the same documentary crew who once chronicled the lives of office workers in Scranton turns their cameras on a passionate publisher trying to revive the newspaper using a team of volunteer reporters.
Domhnall Gleeson (Fountain of Youth, Ex Machina) and Sabrina Impacciatore (G20, The White Lotus) lead the ensemble cast of this comedy mockumentary series that also includes Melvin Gregg, Chelsea Frei, Ramona Young, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Alex Edelman, Tim Key, and many others. In addition, Oscar Nunez, who starred as Oscar Martinez in the original series, also reprises his role in the spinoff.
While the cast of The Paper is packed with fresh faces, longtime fans can’t help but wonder if more familiar faces from The Office besides Nunez might eventually pop up in the series. Well, John Krasinski recently addressed this very question, giving an exciting and hopeful response. On May 19, at the Fountain of Youth NYC premiere at the Museum of Natural History, Krasinski spoke with Extra about the action-adventure film, among other things. When asked whether he’d consider returning to The Office universe for the spinoff, Krasinski didn’t close the door on a cameo, saying, "Done! If they ask me, I’m in."
There didn't seem to be any hesitation on his part, just genuine enthusiasm for the idea. Whether it’s a brief cameo, a one-off episode, or something more substantial, Krasinski’s openness has ignited a fresh wave of excitement among fans eager to see Jim Halpert back on their screens. While no official announcements have been made regarding his involvement, his willingness to return leaves the door wide open for unexpected surprises.
The Paper is set for a September 2025 release on Peacock.
