Who doesn't love a good medical drama? Many would say that Grey's Anatomy is the best medical drama series in television history, and we won't argue that. However, there's a newer show that brought just as much heart, hope, and humanity to the screen. That show is NBC's New Amsterdam. Unlike Grey's Anatomy, which is still ongoing, New Amsterdam ended its run with a fifth and final season back in January 2023. However, we haven't said goodbye to this fan-favorite show just yet.

In March 2024, NBC revealed that a New Amsterdam spinoff called New Amsterdam: Tomorrow was officially in development. But since that announcement, things have gone quiet, prompting fans to question whether the project is still moving forward or if NBC has quietly shelved it. Well, everyone can stop worrying, as it appears the spinoff is still on track.

When asked about New Amsterdam: Tomorrow and NBC's plans for the show, TVLine's CCO Matt Webb Mitovich shared behind-the-scenes scoop that while the spinoff didn’t appear on the network’s official 2025-26 lineup, he's been told that it is still in active development. This means that although we won’t see the series debut this fall, the project hasn’t been abandoned, and there’s still hope that the beloved medical drama universe will continue in the near future. That's good to know for fans who have been eagerly awaiting news.

New Amsterdam: Tomorrow is being created by David Shulner, who also created and served as the executive producer of the New Amsterdam series. It serves as a sequel, taking place 30 years after the events of the final season of the original show, and follows the personal and professional lives of medical professionals at New Amsterdam Hospital.

The story centers on Luna Goodwin, the grown-up daughter of Dr. Max Goodwin, as she assumes the role of Medical Director. Luna will find herself navigating a vastly changed healthcare landscape and confronting new challenges. Advancements, such as artificial intelligence, are expected to play a significant role in the series as well.

While the New Amsterdam series finale set up the spinoff by introducing an adult Luna and her taking on the role of Medical Director, it's unknown who will be playing the character in the new series. Molly Griggs (The Residence) portrayed the adult Luna in the original show. It's also unknown if Ryan Eggold, who played Max Goodwin, will reprise his role in New Amsterdam: Tomorrow. Neither actor has signed on to the project. In fact, no actors are attached at the moment. However, new casting details should start to emerge as the show moves further in the filmmaking process.

We'll get back to you with more juicy details on this spinoff series as soon as NBC shares updates or casting news becomes official. But for now, this is all we know about New Amsterdam: Tomorrow.
