Over the course of its 20 years on the air and over 450 episodes, Grey's Anatomy has been absolutely no stranger to surprising fans with both cast exits and cast returns. I mean, this is a show that can break our hearts at the drop of a hat with a tragic death that we didn't see coming. There's no doubt viewers have trust issues because of Grey's Anatomy's many shocking moments.
Now that Grey's Anatomy season 22 has premiered and already blown us away with a death that we weren't expecting in the premiere episode (as well as a decreased role for a major star), the surprises are just going to keep on coming at Grey Sloan Memorial. In Grey's Anatomy season 22 episode 3, airing on Thursday, Oct. 23 at 10/9c on NBC, the show has a big one for both fans and Teddy.
Sophia Bush returns as Cass in Grey's Anatomy season 22 episode 3
As TV Line revealed with an exclusive first-look teaser, Sophia Bush reprises her role as trauma surgeon Dr. Cass Beckman in Grey's Anatomy season 22 episode 3. The One Tree Hill and Chicago PD alum first appeared as Cass in season 21. Cass became swept up in an interesting dynamic with Teddy (Kim Raver), as Cass' open marriage led to a kiss between her and Teddy.
In the tease of Bush's surprise return to Grey's Anatomy, TV Line's sneak peek clip shows Teddy unexpectedly reuniting with Cass in the elevator. The elevator is always the scene of the crime in this show! Cass asks about Teddy's pineapple pizza, having run into Owen and the kids the night before. Also in the elevator with Jo (Camilla Luddington), Teddy's immediately flustered.
"I'm really glad I ran into you," Cass says while exiting the elevator and looking back at Teddy with a grin. As she explains in the clip, Cass was dropping by the hospital because David (Will Traval), her husband and Grey Sloan surgeon, left his wallet at home. Since Teddy and Owen are separated, could this mean that the door's open for Cass and Teddy to rekindle the flame from their kiss?
We'll have to wait and see what the moment in the elevator and the reunion full of kinetic energy means for Cass and Teddy in season 22, but it definitely means something! Their parting back in season 21 was messy, and it's still a bit messy since Teddy's pretending she and Owen aren't on the outs. But that doesn't mean something couldn't happen down the line.
According to TV Line, showrunner Meg Marinis revealed her desire to bring Bush back as Cass in season 22, but until the preview clip was revealed ahead of season 22 episode 3, Bush's official return was kept quiet. Maybe Marinis was keeping the season's big twist for Teddy a secret from fans for biggest shock value possible. Obviously, we'd never turn down more Sophia Bush on our screens!
