At the end of Grey’s Anatomy season 22’s fall finale, Jo’s life was on the line. We’ve waited weeks to learn if Winston could save her life, and now it’s time to get the answers. Let’s break down Grey’s Anatomy season 22 episode 7.

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS from Grey’s Anatomy season 22 episode 7.

We immediately open with Winston and the rest of the surgical team working on saving Jo’s life. The first step is to get the twins out, allowing that team to work on them, so Winston can then focus on Jo. Winston and Ben aren’t going to just let her die, but things aren’t looking good.

Jo is out of surgery but not out of the woods on Grey’s Anatomy season 22 episode 7

After the title card, we find out that Jo made it out of surgery. However, she’s not out of the woods. The heart pump is doing what it should, but Bailey sits by her side until Jo wakes up. There’s another concern as well, with Webber getting his biopsy results back, but he’s not ready to discuss his diagnosis just yet.

Meanwhile, Link is in the NICU with Ben, where both of the twins are doing pretty well. There are some concerns about one of the twins, who has a heart murmur and needs an echo to be done.

Elsewhere in the hospital, Bailey heads down to the chemo ward to check in on her patient. She’s in on the clinical trial, but there’s concern. The medication that just arrived has already expired, and now Bailey and Adams need to figure out what to do to make sure the trial still starts on time. Well, Lucas is the one who needs to figure that out.

Then there’s Teddy and Owen, who continue to have their own issues. Owen is saved by the ambulance as a small airplane crash victim rolls in. It turns out that it was the first time doing loops, and something went wrong.

The bad news keeps rolling in, as Winston notes that it’s possible they’ll need to consider a heart transplant for Jo. Link is struggling to make all of these decisions right now.

Teddy steps in to help Link

There is potentially an option with another clinical trial with similar drug, but there’s a problem. Katie would have to go to the trial rather than bringing the drugs in, and Adams is given the orders to take her there.

Meanwhile, Helm hands out grunt work to Simone and Blue because they were late for rounds. Like so many others who have become an attending at the hospital, Helm is ready to prove her position, and it’s not like the two are needed for surgery just yet. Sure, there’s a plane crash victim, but there is such a thing as too many doctors working on a patient.

Mohanty steps in as Owen give Milin orders on treatment of the plane crash victim. She is trained in burns, but it’s not easy for Jules to be pushed slightly off the case.

Elsewhere in the hospital, Teddy goes to see how Jo is doing. As she learns more about the twins from Link, she offers to speak with them the NICU staff to help him understand the situation. There is a possibility that Baby B needs surgery, but they’ll start with meds first. Teddy is supportive, just being there to help Link and to make sure he can do everything that’s needed. She’ll stay with the babies while Scout checks in on Luna and Scout, because they need him as well.

On the road, Adams decides not to head on a road that avoids the highways. This gives Adams and Katie a chance to talk about the immunotherapy treatment and the side effects, but of course, nothing can go right. Since when does a road trip for the Grey’s Anatomy characters work out well? Adams either suffers a blow out or catches something on the road, and it looks like they’ll be stuck in the middle of nowhere.

Things goes from bad to worse on Grey's Anatomy

It turns out that the plane crash victim was doing loops to propose to his girlfriend Fiona, but she’s now not responding to calls from the friend. This could mean that she’s jus tin court, as she’s a lawyer, but it could also mean that she hates the friend. However, the doctors can’t share much with the friend as he’s not family, so they need someone who is family to come to the hospital.

As Winston and Ben check in on Jo, a doctor from OB comes to check in. There’s clearly some flirting between them, and Ben picks up on it all, but Winston isn’t willing to have that conversation.

Out in the middle of nowhere, Katie goes into the absence of people who care for her. She knows they think that she needs space, but the absence hurts. She’s not coping well with the cancer and the chemotherapy, and it shows.

Bailey is getting involved in Webber’s business again, as she checks in on whether he’s got his labs back yet. He’s not willing to talk about this, and I can’t tell if he’s just avoiding the conversation or if he is worried about not getting them back yet.

Simone and Blue continue to discuss their relationships, and this time, it’s mostly on Blue’s relationship with Mohanty. Simone wants Blue to take this one seriously, as the two work together. She’s learned from her mistakes, and she thinks Blue should as well. However, considering Blue and Jules managed to keep their relationship to fun, it looks like she’s just projecting.

As for the plane crash victim, things take a turn when Owen realizes she has compartment syndrome. Then, in the NICU, things take a turn for Baby B, as more medical treatment is needed to save her. Link is needed to make another decision for his day-old babies.

Bailey starts to struggle with the weight of everything

Simone and Bryant get a moment in the elevator, where Bryant attempts to get Simone to open up to him. She’s not budging at all, even getting out of the elevator a floor too soon to avoid conversation. She just needs to face facts at this point.

Back with Jo, Bailey takes over from Ben to watch over her so he can go to the restroom. This allows Bailey to finally open up about Webber to someone, knowing that Jo probably isn’t hearing too much and won’t tell people. She’s been checking in on Webber so much because she’s worried. There’s just so much piling up on her, and while talking, Jo’s machines start going off.

Link is going to have his work cut out for him. Baby B needs to go on a bigger vent, but it means she needs to be sedated. Teddy didn’t tell him that when she called him, so naturally, he’s angry that there’s nothing he can do, and so many people to look out for.

As for Jo, the pump is working and in the right place, but there is a bigger issue with the heart. Winston needs to move the pump slightly to help with that problem area. With that done, Ben offers to finish up. Both men realize that Bailey is struggling and about to have a panic attack. He’s there for her, allowing her a moment to break from the pressure of everything around her. This is why I love Ben and Bailey together on Grey’s Anatomy.

Can love win out?

In some good news, Adams manages to get Katie to the hospital for her treatment. They get a chance to continue their heart-to-heart, and after dumping everything on him, Katie decides to give him the next lesson in infusion therapy. You start to really love rom-coms.

Back at the hospital, it turns out that Blue followed Simone’s advice. However, Mohanty never wanted a relationship with him, and Simone realizes that not everyone needs to be in a relationship or is like her. Oops! See, maybe she should stay out of other people’s business.

As for the plane crash victim, Fiona turns up to find out what has happened to her boyfriend. Naturally, she’s angry at the friend for allowing him to fly the plane, but it’s clear that she loves her man. She didn’t see the marriage proposal, and she wishes that he just did something simple like going to a nice restaurant. Of course, she’s going to say yes. Love wins out on Grey’s Anatomy.

Sadly, it’s not the ending that Jules wants. Despite love winning out, the victim suffers gravely from his injuries and Owen has to call time of death.

Is love enough for Link, though? He heads to the chapel. Despite the conversations before, that’s the place he decides to head to. As Webber walks in, he shares that he’s not religious, so he’s not sure why he’s in the chapel, but Webber understands it. You don’t always need to be religious to go to the chapel. However, Link feels angry by being in the chapel.

There’s a beautiful moment for Webber to explain what faith is. Sure, we can get angry at God for allowing bad things to happen, but it’s what faith is about. However, he knows that not everyone can find a way to believe in a higher power, so he shares that in AA, they tell people to believe in the people in the room. Link and Jo have a lot of people around them, so Link needs to rely on them.

There has to be some good news

It’s time for Katie and Adams to head back home, while Simone rushes to Blue to tell him that Mohanty isn’t looking to date. Maybe there is hope for Blue and Mohanty, though, even if that relationship just came out of the blue.

Then over in the NICU, Teddy tells the twins all about a medical case as Link turns up. He apologizes for his reaction before, but Teddy understood. To be honest, Teddy would have likely acted in the same way, and she’s always been able to understand the families of patients as they deal with the reality of situations.

This now gives Link a chance to speak to his twins, and while speaking, he sees that there’s urine in Baby B’s tune. Only parents of sick kids and the NICU nurses can understand just how big of a deal that is and the joy that comes from seeing it happen.

In Webber’s office, Bailey goes to give Webber a piece of her mind, but Webber stops her asking to take some blood for new blood tests. Outside the hospital, Owen sees the plane crash victim’s friend, who is struggling to deal with the loss of his best friend. However, there’s not much to say, and Owen is left with Teddy. The two seem to have eased off a little in terms of tension after the day that they’ve had, with Owen even sharing how proud he is of Teddy getting an interview about her medical procedure with Nora.

Grey’s Anatomy season 22 episode 7 ends with Simone and Bryant hooking up in the on-call room, as Jules heads to the bar to see Winston, only to see him speaking with the OB doc from earlier. She decides not to interrupt that. There’s also good news for Link, as Jo looks to be in recovery from her latest tests. Sure enough, it looks like Jo is going to make it, as she opens her eyes just before the credits roll.

This is a live recap of Grey’s Anatomy so stay tuned for continuous updates.
