It’s hard to believe we’re at the Grey’s Anatomy season 22 fall finale already, but here we are. And it’s set to be a big one. Not only is Jo in trouble as she goes into labor, but Teddy and Owen deal with a major bus crash that could put their lives on the line.
Caution: This post contains SPOILERS from Grey’s Anatomy season 22 episode 6.
We start up with Owen at his trailer, where he’s with Nora. It looks like things are a go for them, but we know how jealous he is of Teddy, though. How long can this last? And how much will Nora put up with being in the middle of nowhere? Well, it’s probably not that that will put her off. When Teddy turns up unexpectedly with the kids, Nora and Owen’s relationship is out.
Look, Teddy was in the wrong just turning up without confirming he could see them. As a separated parent, you need to accept that you have completely different lives.
Meanwhile, we learn that Jo isn’t quite in labor yet. However, she is worried about complications as this scare has come seven weeks early.
Webber annoys Bailey in Grey’s Anatomy season 22 episode 6
Bailey is shocked to find out that her conference has been canceled by Webber without telling her. Since he became chief, he has messed around with her residency program, and she’s fed up with that. Webber is also pushing for the residents to boost their patient count by 10%, but where are they meant to find the patients?
Well, it seems to be their lucky day when there’s a bus crash just outside the hospital. Owen is there to make the call to 911 and start on the trauma work.
Meanwhile, Helm is back! We saw images of her return, and we get a quick update as to where she’s been. She’s been in the South of France for a vacation and to take her boards. She’s in dark blue scrubs, so she’s working her way up the hospital!
The bus crash is a huge situation, with the woman trapped underneath potentially needing her leg to be amputated. The situation is sure to bring some personal feelings up for Teddy and Owen, as this woman has also recently gone through a breakup, and her ex-boyfriend isn’t answering her calls. Would he respond to a call about her being trapped under the bus.
Back at the hospital, an ambulance turns up with one of the patients, but it’s a non-verbal kid on the autism spectrum that is a bigger concern, as he runs out of the ambulance and away from the hospital. Simone and Bryant run after him to try to keep him safe.

Webber doesn’t allow a call
We find out why Teddy goes under the bus. As Owen goes to help another patient, Teddy realizes that she needs to stop the bleeding, and that means getting under the bus. While the bus isn’t stable, a firefighter doesn’t even try to stop her, which makes me question their decisions.
Back at the hospital, Blue manages to get himself into a decent-sounding plastics surgery, but to do that, he needs to do a different job to prove he has the skill. And because Mohanty doesn’t want to do it. We quickly see why she doesn’t want to do it. This guy is a “selfish dirtbag” and when Blue says he only wants to help the man to get in on a surgery, the man agrees to the treatment.
Meanwhile, Jo is struggling to breathe, and Ben and Link have decided to get Winston in to check on her. While it could just be pregnancy related, Winston also questions whether it is something more serious. We know from the promo for Grey’s Anatomy season 22 episode 6 that it is more serious.
The doctors face their first loss of the episode, although Webber isn’t happy with that idea. He pushes for the doctors to find a way to bring the patient back, even though Bailey doesn’t agree with the decision at all. What is Webber going through? Maybe it’s the fact that the guy on the table is a support worker for the guy with autism, who Simone and Bryant have found. This isn’t going to be all that easy to handle, but I get a sense that Bryant is going to know what to do based on the way he reacts.
Back at the scene of the bus accident, the bus jolts while Teddy is underneath it.

Bryant shows his heart and empathy
Teddy is okay, but things aren’t looking good for Maisy, the girl under the bus. She’s lost consciousness, and now they need to get her out of there as soon as possible.
Back at the hospital, Simone and Bryant need to figure out how to help the boy with autism. As Simone goes to get stuff to treat the cut on his head, a nurse brings his bag, which has a computer in it to help him communicate. This offers Bryant and the kid a chance to talk and connect. While Bryant has no idea what he’s really doing, just figuring out a way to connect with the patient is everything that’s needed.
Meanwhile, Blue tries to work on the old patient, with Lucas finding out what Blue has managed to get. However, Lucas leaves and then Blue is paged to the ER, leaving the young intern from the Grey’s Anatomy season 22 premiere to clean up. She’s likely to get through to the old man’s heart.
In the ER, the doctors work on trying to get their patients back to life. It seems to work, as his heart starts beating, but you have to still question what Webber is thinking.
As for Jo, she asks Link to get some socks from the gift shop because her feet are cold. It turns out that she’s been trying to hold back her fear for Link, because she knows what it’s like for partners in his position. Ben is a great support, but when he gets her EKG results, he goes out to the nurse’s station to page Winston 911. He doesn’t want to worry Jo, but this is serious.

Winston delivers some terrifying news in Grey’s Anatomy
Blue continues to push to get in on the surgery, but the emergency takes over; and Helm is awesome at just putting him in his place. It’s time for Maisy to get the medical treatment in the hospital that she needs, but it’s clear that there are issues between Teddy and Owen.
Meanwhile, Dani pushes for Lucas to help with the treatment on the old guy, Frank. She just wants to give him a chance, even if he is a grumpy old man. And elsewhere in the ER, Bryant has managed to get the kid into the hospital, but he doesn’t want anyone to look at the cut on his forehead. Simone finds a way to help with this, getting a hat with a visor (you know the ones with the open head part for vacations) so the kid can play his game while the doctors get to work.
Then there’s the situation with Link and Jo, where Winston comes in with the bad news about her heart. It’s weakening and getting bigger, and while there is medication, it could mean that the babies need to be delivered early. There is also an option to have a pump placed on the heart to give the babies more time to develop, and that’s the one that Jo wants to choose, because she knows the babies need as much time as they can get. Having these men just listen to Jo and give her the choice is a huge moment for them.
Link now turns to Ben and Winston to find out how scared he needs to be. It’s clear that Winston is worried, because he’s putting Ben on Jo’s care exclusively for the day. It doesn’t matter about any other emergency in the hospital.

The doctors work to save their patients’ lives
Lucas and Dani manage to get the patch on the old guy to work, but he’s not happy with the whole situation, making it clear that he will sue the hospital. However, he does consider keeping Dani’s name out of it.
Back in the ER, Bryant turns down working on someone with a test tube to continue treating the kid with autism, and it’s a touching moment that continues to show his heart. I think I’m going to like him. He reminds me a lot of Karev.
Meanwhile, two sets of surgical teams work on their own patients. Bailey does what she can to save her patient she was sure wouldn’t make it, while Owen works on the girl from under the bus. When this happens, we know that usually one of the patients doesn’t make it through.
Outside of the OR, a man comes to the nurse’s station looking for Maisy. He’s in tears, and Teddy is there to help comfort him, although she can’t tell him much.
At the same time, Jo starts to struggle even more. Link is there to be supportive as he collapses in fear, trying to be there for his wife. He has to trust Jo’s life in Winston’s hands, and we know Winston won’t want to lose another doctor in the hospital.

There’s a mixture of good and bad news to end the episode
It turns out that Bailey’s patient makes it through, as Jules shares her excitement with Winston. Little does she know that he’s not having a great day.
Meanwhile, Mohanty gives Lucas the chance to scrub in on the surgery, and he does the right thing in getting Dani into the room as well. He even apologizes for the way he rushed her, realizing that while he was just in a rush, it wasn’t the right thing to do.
Outside of the hospital, Owen and Teddy get a chance to talk. That is after Owen confirms there are “no more naked ladies” with his kids. There’s even some good news about Maisy, as he managed to save her leg, but she wasn’t stable enough to close just yet. So, now, it’s time for Teddy and Owen to talk, and Teddy shares how hard it was to see Owen with someone else. It’s not like Owen hasn’t had to deal with those feelings with Cass, though! And the two actually have a moment where they can be honest and empathetic with each other, and Owen even admits that maybe they’re rushing through a few things.
The problem is, their entire situation is complicated. While they still have feelings for each other, a marriage possibly isn’t the right thing. Owen and Teddy both need to be single and do the work on themselves.
Back in the hospital, things aren’t going well for Jo. It’s time to do a c-section to get the babies out to give all of them a chance.
As for Bryant and Simone, they have a moment as Simone gives Bryant praise. Of course, he uses that as an opening for something to happen between them, but Simone turns him down. He doesn’t lash out, so I’ll give him that, but he is disappointed.
Grey’s Anatomy goes back to steamy(ish) elevator moments, as Mohanty and Blue have a moment. That seemed to come out of nowhere, though.
Of course, the ending of the episode has to be Nora coming to see Owen to turn him down. To be honest, Teddy is more than just Owen’s wife. She is Nora’s lifeline, the person she has to call for every medical need. With that, it means they can’t be together. At least, not just yet.
We also finally get to see Bailey and Webber talk. It turns out that Webber has been distracted, because he has found out he has cancer. It’s no wonder he’s been pushing for doctors to save the patients against all odds. He wants to know he can be in the right hands.
The question is whether Jo is in the right hands. With OB not getting to the OR in time, it’s up to Winston to deliver the babies. He just has to hope that Jo will make it through. And we need to wait until January to find out if that happens!
Grey’s Anatomy will return on Thursday, Jan. 8 at 10/9c on ABC.
